Course Overview

The Bachelor of Creative Media provides advanced preparation for a range of professional roles in the media and communications industry. The course equips graduates with comprehensive skills, theoretical knowledge, and industry experience that can be applied in a variety of fields associated with design, technology and media. The flexible course structure lets you tailor your studies to align with your individual strengths and interests by choosing from specialisations in animation, graphic design, interactive media and screen production. You will learn how to create digital media works using industry-standard software tools and techniques. You will learn how to think critically, solve problems, communicate effectively, and work independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team. You will engage with clients on real-world projects through work-integrated learning (WIL) experiences, either via individual work placements or collaborative team-based projects.

The Bachelor of Creative Media can be studied on-campus or online, offering maximum flexibility to suit your preferred learning style and circumstances. On-campus students benefit from access to dedicated multimedia computer laboratories and production studios. The course also incorporates a one-year Diploma of Creative Media as an optional exit / interim award. Graduates of the Diploma of Creative Media may articulate directly into the second year of the Bachelor of Creative Media, receiving full credit for their studies.

The Bachelor of Creative Media equips graduates with the creative and technical skills needed for success in today’s media and communication industries. Career opportunities span a wide range of fields, including illustration, animation, 3D modelling, motion graphics, visual effects, graphic design, publishing, photography, social media management, web design, user experience design, software development, game development, video production, audio production, screenwriting, film and television production, corporate communications, learning design, advertising and marketing. Equipped with this broad skill set, graduates are well-positioned to contribute to both established media sectors and emerging areas shaped by new technologies and platforms.

Number of Units Required CQUniversity uses the concept of credits to express the amount of study required for a particular course and individual units. The number of units varies between courses. Units in undergraduate courses normally consist of 6 points of credit or multiples thereof (e.g. 12, 18, 24).

English Language Proficiency Requirements

If you were not born in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Ireland, South Africa or the United States of America, you are required to meet the English language proficiency requirements set by the University.

You are required to provide documentation confirming completion of:

  • a secondary qualification (Year 11 and 12, or equivalent), or
  • a completed Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Certificate IV or Diploma level qualification, or
  • a Bachelor level qualification study for a period of at least 2 years fulltime with a minimum overall GPA 4.0.

These qualifications must be completed within Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Ireland, or the United States of America to meet the English language proficiency requirements.

If you do not satisfy any of the above, you will need to undertake an English language proficiency test and achieve the following scores:

  • an International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic) overall band score of at least 6.0 with a minimum 5.5 in each of the four components (listening, reading, writing and speaking), or
  • a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) iBT overall score of at least 75 with no score less than 17 in each of the four components (listening, reading, writing and speaking), or
  • a Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) overall score of at least 54 with no less than 46 in each of the four components (listening, reading, writing and speaking), or
  • an Occupational English Test with a minimum result of 'B' in each of the four components (listening, reading, writing and speaking).

English test results remain valid for no more than two years between final examination date and the date of commencement of study, and must appear on a single result certificate.

Practicum/Work Placement

DGTL28004 - Students undertake a creative media project of their choice in consultation with academic and workplace supervisors. Work placements with an approved organisation (minimum of 120 hours) are an option.

The core of the Bachelor of Creative Media consists of 4 compulsory units of study. In addition to this core, you will complete 1 major from the available options (Animation; Graphic Design; Interactive Media; and Screen Production). Each major consists of 8 units. You will also complete 2 minors from the available options (Animation; Graphic Design; Interactive Media; Screen Production; and Liberal Studies). Each minor consists of a subset of 6 units from the corresponding major. You may not complete a minor that has the same name as your chosen major.
