Course Summary

This online micro-credential is developed for all CQUniversity staff and students engaged in teaching or training activities, and provides a sequence of modules to assist in implementing CQUniversity's First Nations Cultural Competency Framework (2023 – 2028). Within this micro-credential, you will complete modules that explore the scaffolded stages of cultural awareness, cultural safety and cultural competency. You will explore strategies to respectfully integrate First Nations perspectives, voices, and knowledges into teaching and learning practices, and learn how to navigate the challenges of essentialised and static constructions of First Nations people and the inequalities that exist within societal and institutional systems. The final module explores theories that can be applied to build cultural competency in professional practice and to deepen student learning. 

This micro-credential is aligned with CQUniversity's Stretch Reconciliation Action Plan (2025-2028), Action 10: Continue to integrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledges and cultural content and perspectives into the University curriculum, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Upon completion of this micro-credential, you will be awarded a digital badge and certificate of completion, which can be shared to social networks and displayed in your professional portfolio. What is a Digital Badge?

Student Outcomes, Career Opportunities and Occupations

Undertaking this micro-credential may enable participants to meet their Continuing Professional Development (CPD) obligations and industry update requirements in their profession. Upon successful completion of the micro-credential, participants will be awarded a non-creditable micro-credential Digital Badge and a Certificate of Completion.

Course Structures

Study Mode Definitions

  • Online: Online courses provide the flexibility to study without normally requiring a student to visit a campus. Course content is studied through a number of means including the use of online discussion forums, electronic library resources, by contacting lecturers and teachers, and receiving study materials online/electronically. Work integrated learning, including placements, may be included in some courses.
  • On-campus: Students studying in on-campus mode typically are expected to attend and participate in regular, structured on-campus teaching and learning activities throughout the University’s academic term. These activities may include lectures, tutorials, workshops and practice, online or other activities and normally will be timetabled at a CQUniversity campus or approved delivery site.
  • Mixed Mode: Students studying in mixed mode will participate in a combination of online learning activities in addition to site-specific learning activities, which may include residential schools, co-op placements and/or work-integrated learning as a compulsory requirement of a unit. The additional site-specific learning activities are what differentiates a mixed-mode unit from an online unit.

*All study modes may include Vocational placement and/or work integrated learning.

Course Assessment Information

RPL - Students who have previous informal and formal learning need to advise their trainer/assessor prior to enrolment. If the student wishes to apply for an RPL they need to apply to the RPL Centre.
Credit transfer - If credit for relevant formal qualifications is sought, then the process will be actioned after the student has enrolled in at least one unit of competency as directed by the relevant trainer/assessor. The Trainer/Assessor will work with the student on their credit transfer application, and provide advice and support as necessary.

  1. Outline the skills and attributes required to develop cultural awareness, cultural responsiveness and safety, and cultural competency
  2. Identify quality pedagogical approaches that embed First Nations perspectives in enhancing student learning
  3. Review ways of privileging First Nations cultures and voices in teaching scholarship and student learning
  4. Identify essentialised and static constructions of First Nations peoples and apply pedagogies that avoid cultural othering and misappropriation
  5. Recognise ways of leveraging First Nations voices within debates of broadened structural inequality and the post 2023 Referendum context
  6. Recall the main theories and First Nations standpoints that assist in deepening student learning
