Course Summary
This micro-credential aligns with Action 5 of the CQUniversity Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). This micro-credential is aimed at higher education teaching academics and researchers and provides a sequence of modules to assist this defined group to implement the University's First Nations Cultural Competency Framework 2023 - 2028. Modules explore the scaffolded stages of cultural competency detailed in the Framework and focuses on practical ways to improve teaching pedagogy that reflects First Nations cultural competency. Participants will explore approaches to embed First Nations perspectives, voices and knowledges in teaching and learning. They will also learn how to navigate the challenges of essentialised and static constructions of First Nations people and the inequalities that exist within societal and institutional systems and structures. The final module explores theories that can be applied to build cultural competency in professional practice and deepen student learning.
This micro-credential is also awarded a digital badge and Certificate of Completion which can be shared to your social networks and displayed in your professional portfolio.

Student Outcomes, Career Opportunities and Occupations
Undertaking this micro-credential enables students to meet their Continuing Professional Development obligations and industry update requirements in their profession. Upon successful completion of the micro-credential, students will be awarded Continuing Professional Development (CPD) hours, a non-creditable micro-credential (Digital Badge) and a Certificate of Completion.
Course Structures
Study Mode Definitions
- Online: Online courses provide the flexibility to study without normally requiring a student to visit a campus. Course content is studied through a number of means including the use of online discussion forums, electronic library resources, by contacting lecturers and teachers, and receiving study materials online/electronically. Work integrated learning, including placements, may be included in some courses.
- On-campus: Students studying in on-campus mode typically are expected to attend and participate in regular, structured on-campus teaching and learning activities throughout the University’s academic term. These activities may include lectures, tutorials, workshops and practice, online or other activities and normally will be timetabled at a CQUniversity campus or approved delivery site.
- Mixed Mode: Students studying in mixed mode will participate in a combination of online learning activities in addition to site-specific learning activities, which may include residential schools, co-op placements and/or work-integrated learning as a compulsory requirement of a unit. The additional site-specific learning activities are what differentiates a mixed-mode unit from an online unit.

Course Learning Outcomes
- Outline the skills and attributes required to develop cultural awareness, cultural responsiveness and safety, and cultural competency
- Identify quality pedagogical approaches that embed First Nations perspectives in enhancing student learning
- Review ways of privileging First Nations cultures and voices in teaching scholarship and student learning
- Identify essentialised and static constructions of First Nations peoples and apply pedagogies that avoid cultural othering and misappropriation
- Reflect on ways of leveraging First Nations voices within debates of broadened structural inequality and the post 2023 Referendum context
- Recall the main theories and First Nations standpoints that assist in deepening student learning.
