Course Summary

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to collect, treat and store seagrass seed for native revegetation projects. The unit applies to individuals who work under broad direction and use discretion and judgement in the selection and use of available resources to collect seagrass seed in a coastal marine environment. Legislation, regulations and by-laws relating to the collection and removal of plant materials from public and private land apply nationally and in some states, territories and jurisdictions. Users are advised to check with the local, relevant authority.

For your application to be considered, you must meet the following entry requirements.

Students must be willing to travel by ferry to attend off campus seagrass nursery sites.

The unit applies to individuals who work under broad direction and use discretion and judgement in the selection and use of available resources to collect seed in a marine / coastal environment. This is the first formal training course for seagrass-specific restoration techniques. Students completing this course can contribute to the restoration of seagrasses. 

These skills are increasingly sought after by:

• Natural Resource Management (NRM) groups (regional NRM bodies, catchment groups)
• Environmental consultancies working on coastal impact assessment, offsets and restoration projects
• Port and coastal infrastructure environmental managers implementing habitat enhancement and blue carbon initiatives
• Traditional Owner Sea Ranger programs involved in Sea Country monitoring and restoration
• Large-scale marine restoration nurseries, which are rapidly expanding globally as governments and industry invest in seagrass, shellfish and other habitat restoration.

This short course can strengthen pathways into roles such as marine / coastal field technician, restoration nursery officer, environmental project officer, Sea Ranger, and junior environmental consultant or add specialised capability for those already employed in these areas.
