Course Summary

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to plan, collect, handle and store seagrass seed, assess seagrass seed maturity, determine viability, as well as undertake activities that support successful seagrass seed collection and restoration outcomes. The unit applies to individuals who collect and manage seagrass seed under broad direction, follow established environmental or workplace procedures, while taking responsibility for their own work.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Requirements - To Be Eligible

For your application to be considered, you must meet the following entry requirements.

Students must be willing to travel by ferry to attend off campus seagrass nursery sites.

To apply for this course at CQUniversity, you will need to be 14 years of age before the commencement date of your chosen intake.

Requirements - During Your Study

While not needed to apply, you'll need to meet the following requirements throughout your studies.

Students will be required to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) while in the field and seagrass nursery. PPE is required to help keep students safe in practical learning environments.

Students are to wear:

• Closed-in shoes suitable for field work
• Sunsafe shirt
• Sunsafe hat
• Sunscreen
• Long pants

Students must be willing to travel by ferry to attend off campus seagrass nursery sites. 

Students will be required to access CQUniversity’s online learning platform Moodle to complete assessments, for the duration of this short course.

Seagrass meadows are a critical food source for many marine species, yet these important ecosystems are in decline. As a result, there is a growing need for skilled practitioners who can support seagrass collection and nursery operations. This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to collect and propagate native seagrass seeds. This is the first formal training course focused on seagrass-specific restoration techniques. Students completing this course can contribute to the restoration of seagrass ecosystems.

These skills are increasingly sought after by:

• Natural Resource Management (NRM) groups, including regional NRM bodies and catchment groups.
• Environmental consultancies working on coastal impact assessment, offsets and restoration projects.
• Traditional Owner Sea Ranger programs involved in Sea Country monitoring and restoration.

This course can strengthen pathways into roles such as marine and coastal field technician, restoration nursery officer, environmental project officer, Sea Ranger and junior environmental consultant, while also adding specialised capability for those already employed in these areas.
