Unit Synopsis
Traumatic injury is one of Australia’s most significant health problems. It is a major cause of death and disability, affecting all population groups and is responsible for a cost of billions annually. This figure outweighs both cardiovascular disease and diabetes combined. Within this course students will develop an understanding of traditional and emerging approaches to assisting those suffering traumatic injuries within an EMS specific context and will include a week by week approach to systematic assessment of each body system. By completion the student will have a comprehensive understanding of the systematic assessment and the overall management of trauma within an EMS context.

Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
Recommended Student Time Commitment
Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.
Assessment Tasks
| Assessment Task | Weighting |
|---|---|
| 1. Online Quiz(zes) | 50% |
| 2. On-campus Activity | 50% |
This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). Volume of Assessment over Term 2 of third year in general of which this course is a major contributor
Course Coordinators for Term 2 third year courses undertake a review of assessment with a view to reducing the number of summative assessments students undertake. Further to this Course Coordinators should review scheduling of course assessment with a view to minimising the impact of early employment on study workload.
In Progress
On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:
- Assess trauma environments for mechanisms of injury and predicted pattern of injuries.
- Evaluate and manage trauma related conditions within the pre-hospital environment.
- Identify and use the principles of Emergency Medical Systems (EMS) and retrieval services.
