Unit Synopsis
This clinical course will provide further opportunities to apply and integrate both theoretical and practical knowledge, concepts, skills and professional behaviours in the clinical environment. It is a continuation of the development of essential technical, professional and patient care skills, while under the supervision of qualified professionals, from the immediately preceding clinical course MEDS12007. The focus in this course includes renal ultrasound and progression to a complete abdominal ultrasound including the bladder at an advanced beginner level. Students will learn to analyse images and solve problems in a professional and creative manner. Behavioural aspects of professional practice are emphasised and students are encouraged to reflect on their own performance and to exhibit the highest level of safe patient care. Critical appraisal of performance will enable students to develop their patient care, professional, technical and analytic skills in a work setting under supervision.

Prerequisite: MEDS12007 Medical Sonography Clinical Course 1 Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
Recommended Student Time Commitment
Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Clinical manual was not supplied in hard copy to the clinical sites, suggestion made that this may be helpful.
Ensure the clinical placement sites do have a copy of the clinical manual and ask for email confirmation on receipt of the clinical manual from each clinical placement site.

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:
- Demonstrate developing competency at an advanced beginner level in performing the following diagnostic ultrasound examinations: renal ultrasound and a complete abdominal ultrasound, including the bladder.
- Interpret and apply requests for sonographic examinations.
- Demonstrate appropriate patient care skills and professional behaviour.
- Distinguish between normal, anomalous and abnormal sonographic appearances and critique images for diagnostic sufficiency and, initiate corrective action if needed.
- Communicate clearly and effectively.
- Solve problems critically and creatively using a variety of strategies.
- Evaluate his/her own thinking throughout the steps and processes used in problem solving and decision making.
- Manage the use of time and other resources to complete tasks and attain goals.
- Take responsibility for his/her own actions and use reflective practice for personal and professional development.

- Write appropriate technical impressions and preliminary reports.
