MEDI13006 - Imaging Procedures 4

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This is the fourth and final Imaging Procedures unit in the course. There are two main areas of focus for the unit - adaptation radiography and fluoroscopic procedures. You will build on your knowledge and skills from prior theory units and clinical placements and further develop your problem-solving skills in the planning and execution of imaging procedures on complex patients and in complex environments such as theatre, casualty and wards. A range of fluoroscopic procedures will be discussed with respect to goals, technique, environments and the radiographer's role. You will examine the critical contribution of interpersonal skills such as effective communication and teamwork to the radiographer's ability to perform effectively and efficiently in these procedure areas.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Assessment Overview

Recommended Student Time Commitment

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Tasks

This information will not be available until 8 weeks before term.
To see assessment details from an earlier availability, please search via a previous term.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Source: Teaching team reflection
Feedback
Encourage consolidation of theoretical knowledge and increase preparedness for complex imaging environments for subsequent work integrated learning (WIL) clinical placements.
Recommendation
Investigate a change in assessment strategy from online open book test to in-class test.
Action Taken
Assessment strategy was revised by replacing the online open-book test with an in-class test to strengthen knowledge consolidation and ensure students demonstrate applied understanding under controlled conditions.
Source: Teaching team review
Feedback
Update unit content to include additional imaging modalities to provide scaffolding for subsequent work integrated learning (WIL) clinical placements.
Recommendation
Investigate new content on imaging modalities.
Action Taken
Unit content was enhanced to incorporate new imaging modalities, including MRI, ultrasound, PET-CT, and nuclear medicine imaging. These additions provide students with broader exposure to contemporary diagnostic techniques, supporting scaffolding for complex clinical environments and future work-integrated learning placements. Additionally, lecture content was expanded to include topics such as appropriate contrast agent selection, risk management (perforation, aspiration, venous extravasation), barium enema procedures with patient care considerations and safe rectal tube insertion. Also added detailed coverage of DSA and cardiac catheterisation procedures.

Feedback
The written assessment contributed towards increased workload for staff and students.
Recommendation
Investigate the option of alternate assessment design and structure for the written assessment to identify opportunities for reducing complexity and workload for both students.
Action Taken

Feedback
Having the mobile assessment earlier in the term was well received by students.
Recommendation
Maintain the timing of mobile assessment to earlier in the term to ease the spread of assessment load on students throughout the term.
Action Taken
In Progress

Feedback
The implementation of the in-class test instead of online open book test supported knowledge consolidation and ensured students demonstrated applied understanding.
Recommendation
Continue this assessment strategy in future iterations.
