Unit Synopsis

This unit provides you with an overview of the business and commercial aspects of professional engineering and assists you to develop a specific skill relevant to your intended career. You will be able to evaluate workplace experiences in terms of the Engineers Australia, Stage 2 Competencies for Professional Engineers.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Recommended Student Time Commitment

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback
Students found the content interesting and applicable to their future careers but desired more guidance on the business report.
Recommendation
Additional guidance on business report writing should be provided within the unit to help students develop this critical skill.

Some students appeared to have struggled with the cost analysis task due to insufficient information and unclear data analysis methods.
Recommendation
Additional explanations for completing complex tasks like cost analysis should be provided.

The cost analysis and its detailed processes was delivered through lecture. It was expected that the students will understand the process clearly.

Unclear instructions and discussions on some aspects of assessment one resulted in numerous Q&A posts and emails seeking clarification.
Recommendation
Assessment 1 instructions and resources should be reviewed for better clarity.

Feedback
Some of the ISL Lectures were abruptly cut off, leaving no time for Q&A sessions and limiting opportunities for clarification.
Recommendation
The duration of the lectures should be extended when required to include dedicated Q&A sessions to ensure all student queries are addressed adequately.
Action Taken
The ISL problems and cut off issues is not uncommon here at CQU. In those circumstances, TaSAC is contacted immediately to solve the issues.

Clarification of assessment requirements at the start of term.
Recommendation
All assessment requirements, including type, format, and weighting, should be confirmed and communicated to students at the start of the term to ensure transparency and consistency throughout the delivery period.
