Unit Synopsis
Students should be able to work in teams to model, analyse, design and verify digital electronic design projects. On satisfactory completion students should be able to discuss the application of digital electronics devices in information processing applications. In addition, they should be able to interpret functional requirements, research implementation options, analyse circuit performance, construct models for testing, verify system performance, and prepare project documents using symbols and terminologies that comply with Australian standards.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Unit Availabilities from Term 1 - 2026
Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
Recommended Student Time Commitment
Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.
Assessment Tasks
| Assessment Task | Weighting |
|---|---|
| 1. Written Assessment | 25% |
| 2. Written Assessment | 25% |
| 3. Written Assessment | 35% |
| 4. Practical Assessment | 15% |
| 5. Written Assessment | 0% |
This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).
Past Exams
All University policies are available on the Policy web site, however you may wish to directly view the following policies below.
This list is not an exhaustive list of all University policies. The full list of policies are available on the Policy web site .
Term 1 - 2014 : The overall satisfaction for students in the last offering of this course was 91.67% (`Agree` and `Strongly Agree` responses), based on a 66.67% response rate.
Feedback, Recommendations and Responses
Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

The supporting software (multisim) is only available for windows, not Mac.
Unfortunately that was beyond CQU's control and until National Instruments produce Multisim for MAC OS this problem will remain. However, next year it will make clear in the course profile under 'IT Resources' that students should have a computer with Widows 7 or later to install and run Multisim software. (Alternatively students can partition the Apple hard disc and install Windows in secondary partition (for ex.: Bootcamp). This is a soft skill students should have developed during their SKILLS I & II in year 1)

The amount of support given by teaching staff through recorded tutes and the forum was the best part.
This practice will be continued.

1.The Design Assignment was very challenging and encouraged me to research the subject beyond the course material. Learnt a lot through this process 2. The online videos were also very helpful 3.Residential school was very organised and efficient
This practice will be continued.

Although the Multisim software is easy to navigate it might have been easier if it had been integrated into the course before the design assignment.
It was encourraged from the begining to use the multisim files in each chapter. Next year more strict measure will be taken to make sure no student will miss that from the begining of the term.
In Progress
On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:
- Describe digital number systems and explain how these systems are applied in the processing of digital information [1, 3]
- Explain the operation of discrete and Integrated Circuit (IC) digital electronic devices and their applications in information processing [1, 3]
- Explain the operation of combinational and sequential logic circuits [1, 3]
- Explain the current trend of Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) devices and their applications in information processing tasks [1, 3]
- Interpret function requirements, evaluate circuit options and prepare design documentation for basic industrial control applications [1, 3, 4]
- Construct digital circuits to a given design and validate their operation [1, 3, 4, 5]
- Interpret and use electronic engineering terminologies and symbols that conform to Australian Standards [1, 2, 3, 5, 9]
- Work collaboratively and autonomously to solve problems and record and communicate clearly and professionally the approach used to solve problems [2, 4, 6, 9, 10]
