Unit Synopsis
This unit leads you to learn major areas of planning of a construction project including construction planning and scheduling; the role of the construction planning consultant; developing an initial job using labour, materials, plant and time units from design documentation; estimates and/or Bills of Quantities; using construction planning methodologies and tools such as bar charts, critical path methods, line of balance, cash flow projections; least cost optimization; flagging approval and detailed schedules of sub-contract activities. The choice of software for scheduling and network analysis will be examined as a further added learning experience.

Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
Recommended Student Time Commitment
Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

CL72 students identify that the unit learning helps to apply construction planning concepts and methods in engineering context.
Same teaching method will be adopted for next and future deliveries.
Same teaching methods, such as working through practice examples in class and explaining many real-world practice contexts in lectures, were applied in the current delivery. This led to higher engagement between students and the lecturer.

Students found that the discussion of scheduling methods is very interesting. They have not been aware of the background of other methods than MS Project.
Same teaching method will be adopted for next and future deliveries.
The current delivery followed the same teaching method: first describing the basics and fundamentals and later reflecting on their application using software programs. Student enthusiasm to know the basics led to higher engagement between students and the lecturer.

Some students did not have the access to MS Project on their own.
Recommend students to use the free trial or get the remote desktop app that wirelessly connects to the University computers which has MS Projects. Further support can be sought from TASAC emailing to tasac@cqu.edu.au or calling at 0749309009.

Check opportunities of creating dual degrees within the college or school to improve the enrolment numbers.
Head of Course and Built Environment Team is exploring the opportunities liaising with other parties. Necessary actions will be taken upon the feasibility of the collaborations.
The conversation is ongoing for new opportunities and they are pending at the moment.
