Overview
This unit introduces you to the physiotherapy profession, including regulatory, ethical and legal frameworks underpinning practice within the context of the changing healthcare environment. This unit includes fundamental aspects of physiotherapy practice, including the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) Framework, communications skills and the therapeutic relationship, cultural competence, inter-professional healthcare, and gathering, analysing and problem-solving information through a process of clinical reasoning. You will also develop practical skills in relation to subjective examination, therapeutic massage, assessment of posture and movement, patient manual handling, walking aid prescription, and clinical documentation.

Pre-requisites or Co-requisites
To enrol in this unit, you must be enrolled in the CB85 Course and meet the following co-requisites: BMSC11007 Medical Anatomy and Physiology 1ALLH11001 Introduction to Allied Health PracticeALLH11009 Research Methods for Health Professionals
Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
Recommended Student Time Commitment
Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of 'pass' in order to pass the unit. If any 'pass/fail' tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully ('pass' grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the 'assessment task' section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). 1 Practical Assessment
There are two parts of Practical Assessment 1. The weighting of Practical Assessment 1 is 30% of the overall unit grade, with each part equally weighted.
Part 1: Subjective Examination (15%)
You are required to conduct a subjective examination (patient interview) that concludes with a summary to your patient of the most important findings that were obtained in the interview. The patient interview including the summary must be no longer than 12 minutes. The interview will be ceased at this time point and as such, no further marks will be awarded. Please note that the patient summary is a communication tool only - use this to check your understanding with your patient but do not present a diagnostic hypothesis.
Five clinical scenarios will be used for this assessment task. You will have access to a brief overview of all clinical scenarios on Moodle Week 4 Tuesday at 4:00pm to assist in your preparation and practice. You will be randomly allocated one of these scenarios at the commencement of your examination.
To assist in developing your ability to both structure a systematic interview and recall important findings, you are permitted to use a self-supplied clipboard with a piece of blank paper or a blank template during the interview. If using a template, it must be one page (single-sided) and contain only headings, subheadings, and/or a body chart. The template must be approved for use by your tutor or unit coordinator at least 24 hours prior to your assessment.
You must come appropriately attired for the Practical Assessment (full clinical uniform).
A timetable for the Practical Assessment (Part 1) will be published on Moodle by Week 4 Tuesday at 4:00pm.
Approved Use of Generative AI
- Restricted Resource Policy: As this is a supervised, closed-book assessment, access to Generative AI tools or any other external digital resources is not permitted.
Part 2: Documentation (15%)
You are required to watch a video of a physiotherapist conducting a patient interview and organise, structure, and record the interview as if you were documenting a formal patient record. Documentation must be hand written and include both written notes and a body chart.
One clinical scenario will be used for this assessment task. You will have access to this clinical scenario on Moodle Week 4 Tuesday at 4:00pm

Approved Use of Generative AI
- Permitted AI Use: You are permitted to use Generative AI tools (such as ChatGPT or other AI platforms) to assist with research, brainstorming, and drafting. However, critical analysis and final editing must be your own work.
- Confidentiality and Patient Information: If you are using clinical patient information, confidentiality must be maintained at all times. Patient data must not be input into Generative AI platforms or shared with any external tools. Only de-identified or synthesised case information is permitted for educational purposes.
- Appropriate Referencing: Any content generated or influenced by AI must be clearly referenced following the university's AI referencing guidelines. Failure to reference AI-generated content appropriately may result in academic misconduct. - Academic Integrity: You are reminded that your submission should reflect your understanding and synthesis of ideas. Over-reliance on AI-generated content may impact the quality of work and evaluation outcomes and result in academic misconduct.

Late Arrival to Assessment
You should aim to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the official assessment commencement time. In the extraordinary circumstance that you are late, you will be permitted late entry to your assessment of up to 10 minutes after the official commencement time. The period of lateness will be deducted from your overall assessment time. If you are denied access to the assessment due to lateness (i.e. arriving beyond the permitted late entry period), you should make an application for an assessment extension, which may or may not be approved in line with CQU policy. If the application for an assessment extension is denied, you will receive a grade of zero percent (0%) for the assessment item.
Assessment Moderation Using Video Recordings
To ensure consistency and fairness in the evaluation of practical assessments, including Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE), this unit may employ video recordings as a method for assessment moderation. These recordings allow for a thorough review of student performance, providing an objective basis for feedback and grading. Assessors may review the recordings to verify the accuracy of initial assessments and to identify any discrepancies. This process also facilitates the calibration of grading standards among different assessors. By utilising video recordings, we aim to maintain high standards of assessment integrity and support continuous improvement in teaching and learning practices. 2 On-campus Activity
There will be two hurdle assessments:
Hurdle 1 (Pre-Clinical Requirements)
Prior to your commencement of any clinical placement, there are a number of mandatory pre-clinical requirements that must be completed. In order to be eligible to PASS this unit, all pre-clinical requirements must be completed, and evidence of completion of each requirement submitted via the online platform SONIA by no later than Week 8 Friday at 4:00pm. After submission, your assessment will undergo a compliance review over a two-week period to ensure it meets all required standards. If your submission meets all requirements, no further action is needed and you will receive confirmation of this through receipt of a PASS grade. If errors are identified in your submission, you will receive specific instructions on how to correct these issues. You are then required to follow the provided instructions to address all identified errors and submit the corrected assessment by the Correction Submission Deadline Week 12 Friday at 4:00pm via the same platform (SONIA). Failure to submit corrections by the deadline will result in a FAIL grade for this assessment. No further extensions will be granted unless exceptional circumstances can be documented.
The CQUniversity Physiotherapy Clinical Placement Moodle Site contains all information required to complete the pre-clinical requirements. Please note that these requirements are mandated by authorities and facilities external to CQUniversity and are subject to change at any time. Pre-clinical requirements will be presented and discussed in detail in orientation.
Results for this hurdle will be available once completion of all pre-clinical requirements is confirmed by the clinical educator coordinator.
Hurdle 2 (Attendance)
A minimum attendance rate of 85% for practical and tutorial sessions is required in order to be eligible to PASS this unit. This minimum attendance requirement is recommended by the Australian Physiotherapy Council and thus has been integrated as a requirement into the CB85 Physiotherapy course. If there is a genuine reason for being absent, you must inform the unit coordinator as soon as possible and submit a medical certificate or other supporting documentation via email within five days of missing the session.
The monitoring of attendance will take into consideration legitimate requests for absence such as those outlined in the Assessment Policy and Procedure (5.21 and 5.22) (e.g. medical or allied health, compassionate, misadventure and exceptional circumstances). You will be notified by the unit coordinator when you reach the 85% threshold. If you require a prolonged absence (>3 sessions) for a health-related condition, you will be required to have a face-to-face discussion with the unit coordinator and head of course to discuss your progression in the unit.
Attendance rates for this hurdle will be calculated after Week 11 Friday at 4:00pm.

3 Online Quiz(zes)
The in-class quiz will assess content from weeks 6-10 inclusive. The quiz will consist of 45 questions (worth 50 marks) and will have a time limit of 90 minutes. The questions will be identical for all students, however they will be randomly generated from a question bank so that the quiz may appear differently for each student. The quiz is a closed book assessment which will be supervised by a CQUniversity staff member and must be completed at the scheduled time on either the Bundaberg, Rockhampton, or Cairns campus. Access to all resources other than the quiz itself is prohibited (e.g., books, notes, electronic devices or websites other than the quiz itself). It is recommended that a laptop be used for this assessment, however a tablet is permitted. The use of a mobile phone is not permitted for this assessment item.

4 Practical Assessment
Practical Assessment 2 is intended to assess your safety and practical application of physiotherapy skills. It will be scheduled for either week 1 or week 2 of the university's examination period. The weighting of Practical Assessment 2 is 45% of the overall unit grade, with each station weighted equally. All content from PSIO11004 and co-requisite units is examinable in this assessment task.
This Practical Assessment will include three stations focusing on each of the following techniques:
- Therapeutic massage
- Manual handling
- Walking aid prescription
Your assessment will have a total time limit of 30 minutes (10 minutes per station). Your performance on each station may be assessed by a different examiner. For each station, you are required to demonstrate applied knowledge and understanding of the topic/ technique and perform the practical technique(s) instructed. You are expected to:
- Demonstrate safe application of the technique(s), applied knowledge and understanding of the topic/ technique and perform the practical technique(s) instructed. You are expected to: Demonstrate safe application of the technique(s).
- Demonstrate good communication and professional and ethical behaviour.
- Demonstrate specific practical skills (therapeutic massage, manual handling, and walking aid prescription) that are accurate, effective and efficient.
You must come appropriately attired for the Practical Assessment (full clinical uniform). When being patient, please change into appropriate casual clothes.

What is a breach of academic integrity?
