General Information

Overview

Throughout this unit, you will acquire fundamental knowledge and skills to provide basic nursing care at at beginning level. In particular, you will be able to conduct a holistic assessment and assist a person with their activities of daily living in the simulated environment. You will be introduced to the significance of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Registered Nurse Standards for Practice (2016) and other policies, codes, and guidelines relevant to professional nursing practice. You will explore the importance of the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards (2017) to all nursing practice in Australia and commence using the Patient Safety Competency Framework (PSCF) (Levett-Jones et al., 2017) in your practice as a nursing student. You will become familiar with scope of practice using the decision-making framework (DMF) (NMBA, 2020). You are required to participate in compulsory on-campus workshops or a residential school for this unit.

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

More time needs to be taken in the writing/proofreading of subject materials that are uploaded to moodle. There were significant spelling and grammatical errors throughout the unit, as well as in the assessment quizzes.

Recommendation

Unit coordinators and the Dean of Learning and Teaching (DDLT) will continue to proofread content, materials and assessment quizzes.

The maths component of the unit should be completed at home before attending residential school. Issues with clarity.

Recommendation

The maths exam is invigilated and therefore requires lecturers to oversee it as it is in progress. The exam questions are reviewed by the Head of Course (HoC), Head of College (HoC) and the Dean of Learning and Teaching (DDLT). This process will continue every term.

This assessment aims for you to demonstrate your ability to perform basic math.

 

Instructions
Before attending the residential school:

·       Please test that your CQU Moodle login and password are working.

·       Please follow the NURS11166 Moodle site steps to access the preparatory resources for this quiz.

Note: Students are advised to bring their own device (BYOD) for this assessment. If you are unable to bring your own computer, please discuss with the unit coordinators. Laptops are the preferred device as tablets or other electronic devices may not work as effectively for the purpose of this assessment.  

 

Please follow the steps below to complete this invigilated online assessment task:

·       You are completing an online quiz in Moodle. The quiz will assess your knowledge and understanding of performing basic maths.

·       Quiz questions are drawn from a bank and will be randomised.

·       The invigilated online quiz will occur on Day 1 of your NURS11166 Health and Assessment in Nursing residential school.

·       Access the quiz via the Assessment 1 portal on the NURS11166 Moodle site.

·       The quiz consists of 20 questions. Each question is worth 1 mark.

·       You have a maximum of 60 minutes to complete the quiz. You must complete the quiz in one sitting. Once you start the quiz, you must complete it in 60 minutes. The quiz will automatically close at the end of 60 minutes and will submit your result even if you have not finished.

·       You can have a maximum of 3 attempts for the quiz. The highest result will be recorded as your grade.

·       Once you have started the quiz, you cannot log out. Please do not refresh or reload your screen as this may close the quiz and record your result.

·       If you have any technical issues let the teacher or unit coordinator/s know immediately. We will assist you with resolving the issue or refer you to TASAC for further assistance (toll-free phone number 1300 666 620).

 

Requirements
·       You will have a maximum of three (3) attempts to obtain 100%. Please refer to the Coaching process for medication calculations and safety quiz should you require a 2nd or 3rd attempt. Failure to achieve 100% after three attempts may result in a Fail grade and you may not be able to progress to clinical placement.

·       Computer access with a reliable internet connection. Please see the note above regarding types of electronic devices.

·       An active (working) CQU Moodle login and password.

Medication formulas can be used to assist you in your calculations. You may also use a calculator, pen/pencil, and blank paper. Calculator applications on mobile phones or any other smart device with internet access will not be permitted during this assessment.

·       To pass this Unit, you are required to achieve a Pass grade in all assessment tasks.

Instructions:

The practical clinical skills assessment evaluates your nursing practice against the NMBA registered nurse standards for practice (2016). To undertake this assessment, you will participate in a simulation-based activity, demonstrating safe practice through the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care.

You will be provided an opportunity for three attempts to pass this assessment and must engage in feedback and reflection between each attempt. All attempts are conducted face-to-face during residential school and or internal classes.

 

Assessment Criteria

This practical clinical skills assessment will be based on the skills and theory you have learned in this unit. To attain a pass grade, you must satisfactorily complete all areas of the Assessment 2 marking criteria sheet found on the NURS11166 Moodle site under the Assessment tile.

 

Submission 

·       The teaching team will retain a photocopy of your marking criteria and provide you with the original copy

·       You are required to upload this to the Assessment 2 submission area on the NURS11166 Moodle site within 72 hours of completing the assessment. 

 

Minimum Pass Criteria 

·       To pass this assessment, you are required to pass all criteria with an Achieved result.

·       To pass this Unit, you are required to achieve a Pass grade in all assessment tasks.

·       In the event you are eligible for a supplementary assessment, all assessment tasks must be reasonably attempted in this unit.

Aim  

The aim of this assessment is for you to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the learning outcomes associated with the principles of the nursing process. Additionally, it aims to demonstrate proficiency in applying the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Decision-Making Framework (DMF) (2020) and the NMBA Registered Nurse Standards for Practice (2016) in the context of delivering evidence-based nursing care.

 

Instructions
·       You are required to attempt two (2) online quizzes. 

·       Quiz A will assess your knowledge and understanding of materials covered in Weeks 1–5. Quiz B will assess your knowledge of materials covered in weeks 1–12. 

·       Quiz questions are drawn from a bank and will be randomised.

·         Access the quiz via the Assessment tile portal on the Unit Moodle site. Quiz A is comprised of 30 questions consisting of multiple choice, true/false, drag and drop and fill in the word. Quiz B consists of 30 consisting of multi-choice, true/false, drag and drop and fill in the word.

·        Each question in Quiz A and Quiz B is worth 1 mark. 

·       This is an open-book quiz. You can refer to your learning materials at any time during your attempt. However, students should be familiar with the content as time limits apply. 

·       You have a maximum of 60 minutes to complete Quiz A and 60 minutes to complete Quiz B.

·       You must complete each quiz in one attempt.

·       The quiz will automatically close at the end of the allocated time and will submit your result even if you have not finished.

·       You have a maximum of ONE (1) attempt for both quizzes. With the possibility of a re-attempt once you have completed the last quiz in week 12. 

·       Once you have commenced your quiz, you cannot log out. Please do not refresh or reload your screen as this may close your quiz and record your result. 

·       If you have any technical issues, let the unit coordinators know immediately. You are required to take a screenshot or photo of the issue and email it to the unit coordinators as soon as possible. We will assist you with resolving the issue or refer you to TaSAC for further assistance (toll-free phone number 1300 666 620.

Marking Criteria


To achieve a passing grade for this unit you are required to pass both Quiz A and Quiz B assessment items. The minimum pass grade is 60% in Quiz A and 60% in Quiz B. If you do not receive a passing grade, you may be eligible for a re-attempt. A re-attempt is where you are given a second opportunity to demonstrate your achievement of one or more of the unit’s learning outcomes before you can progress to new learning or participate in subsequent learning activities. You may be given the opportunity to re-attempt an assessment but will only achieve a mark no greater than the minimum for a pass standard for the assessment. You must:

·       have shown a reasonable attempt to complete the initial assessment task

·       be granted a re-attempt by your Unit Lead/Coordinator make changes to the nominated assessment task which you have failed and resubmit the revised work for marking within seven consecutive days, no assessment extensions will be approved.

Please note: Only one opportunity for a re-attempt is allowed for Quiz A and Quiz B.

Minimum Pass Criteria 

·       To pass this assessment, you are required to achieve a minimum grade of 60% in Quiz A and 60% in Quiz B.

·       To pass this Unit, you are required to achieve a Pass grade in all assessment tasks.

·       In the event you are eligible for a supplementary assessment, all assessment tasks must be reasonably attempted in this unit.
