Overview
This clinical placement unit is the second of four that provides you with midwifery clinical experience. You will have the opportunity to assess, plan, provide, and evaluate the physiological and psychosocial care of the woman experiencing complex factors. Complexities may arise during the antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal period and include the fetus and neonate. You will provide care in collaboration and consultation with the intra and interprofessional team utilising the Australian College of Midwives 'National Midwifery Guidelines for Consultation and Referral'. The clinical practicum component of this unit will require you to complete a minimum of 224 hours in addition to Continuity of Care Experiences (COCE).

Pre-requisites or Co-requisites
Co-requisite: MDWF12005 Foundations of Midwifery 2
Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses
Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.
Feedback from Discussions with students as clinical site visits and via email.
Student feedback was that the Continuity of Care (CoCE) reflective portfolio assessment was too repetitive with 4 antenatal entries, 1 for birth and a minimum of 2 for postnatal care for each of the ten CoCE experiences they were undertaking. They stated the number of topics to write about was overwhelming.
The structure of the assessment is to be reviewed by the midwifery team to take into account student feedback on the repetitive nature of the entries in the Continuity of Care reflective portfolio assessment. This will take into consideration the learning outcomes for the unit and assessment.
Feedback from Email communication with students whose reflective portfolios did not meet the unit requirements.
Students were unaware that it was a unit requirement to complete 3 x Continuity of Care Experiences, recruit a further 3 and submit their reflective portfolio for these experiences by the end of term 2.
This information was shared with students during the term 2 residential school and on the Moodle page for Midwifery Practice 2. It will be reviewed to ensure clarity and accessibility for all students. Assessment requirements will be provided in multiple formats, including during clinical site visits, to ensure students are fully aware of the unit expectations.
