UEE32220 - Certificate III in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration

Course Details

Course Summary

This qualification covers competencies to select components, install, set up, test, fault find, repair and maintain refrigeration systems and equipment that apply to food storage and preservation, and air conditioning and air distribution equipment in buildings and premises. It includes regulatory requirements for purchasing and handling refrigerants.

Competency development activities in this qualification are subject to regulations directly related to licencing. A relevant contract of training through an apprenticeship or relevant employment may be required to enable the application of the required knowledge and skills to on the job work activities and environments.

Refrigerant Handling Licence:

The achievement of the qualification meets the training components for the full national Refrigerant Handling Licence which is required to work on refrigeration and air conditioning equipment that carries the risk of a fluorocarbon refrigerant being emitted while decanting the refrigerant or manufacturing, installing, commissioning, servicing, maintaining or decommissioning refrigeration and air conditioning equipment.

Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Occupational Licence:

Additional and/or other conditions may apply in some jurisdictions subject to regulations related to refrigeration/air conditioning work. Practice in the workplace and during training is also subject to work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) regulations.

Electrical Occupation Licence:

The achievement of this qualification with the core restricted electrical units meet the electrical regulatory requirements for related restricted electrical work in most state/territories. This is required to work on electrical installations which are designed to operate at voltages greater than 50 volt (V) alternating current (a.c.) or 120 V direct current (d.c.).

Entry Requirements

Completion of the bksb (Basic Key Skills Builder) online literacy and numeracy assessment prior to enrolment, unless the student has completed an equal or higher level course.

Participants are best equipped to achieve competency in this unit if they have reading, writing and numeracy skills indicated by the following scales. Description of each scale is given in Volume 2, Part 3 ‘Literacy and Numeracy’

Course Structures

In order to complete this course, you must:

  1. Complete 27 core units
  2. Complete 6 elective units

Study Mode Definitions

  • Online: Online courses provide the flexibility to study without normally requiring a student to visit a campus. Course content is studied through a number of means including the use of online discussion forums, electronic library resources, by contacting lecturers and teachers, and receiving study materials online/electronically. Work integrated learning, including placements, may be included in some courses.
  • On-campus: Students studying in on-campus mode typically are expected to attend and participate in regular, structured on-campus teaching and learning activities throughout the University’s academic term. These activities may include lectures, tutorials, workshops and practice, online or other activities and normally will be timetabled at a CQUniversity campus or approved delivery site.
  • Mixed Mode: Students studying in mixed mode will participate in a combination of online learning activities in addition to site-specific learning activities, which may include residential schools, co-op placements and/or work-integrated learning as a compulsory requirement of a unit. The additional site-specific learning activities are what differentiates a mixed-mode unit from an online unit.

*All study modes may include Vocational placement and/or work integrated learning.

Select a course structure below to view the delivery details, including the different study modes offered for each structure.

Standard Course Structure

The delivery is over 4 years face to face delivery and on the job training, as determined by the individual training plan.

Students participating in this course are individuals under a licence to train from the ESO and indentured apprentices completing a four year apprenticeship under a Training Contract between the RTO, Employer and apprentice. The program is delivered in blocks of between 2 weeks and 4 weeks over the duration of the apprenticeship as determined by the individual apprentice Training Plan. The maximum class size is 14. A total of 932 hours is delivered face to face with further on the job training taking place throughout the 4 year apprenticeship.

Needs of the participants and relevant industry were determined by gathering information through the following processes:

• Face to face discussions

• Reports and other printed documents

• Forums and workshops

• Industry consultation

• ElectroComms and Energy Utilities Industry Skills Council

Duration: The program is delivered to apprentices over a nominal 4-year period as determined by the individual apprentice training plan.

Organisation and Delivery Mode:

The program has been organised to be delivered in a combination of on/off job. This program is organised around key work activities and focuses on industry specific skills. This program is organised to reflect the learning and work activities that take place within an Industrial Site. The application of this knowledge is assessed in other components of the program that focus on specific work activities. eProfiling is required for confirmation of competency.
