SHB40121 - Certificate IV in Beauty Therapy
Course Details
Course Summary
This qualification reflects the role of individuals who work as beauty therapists to provide a range of beauty therapy treatments and services, including lash and brow treatments, nail services, make-up, massage and waxing. They communicate with clients to recommend treatments and services, and sell retail skin care and cosmetic products. These individuals undertake work independently, with limited guidance from others, to perform routine and non-routine activities and solve non-routine problems. They apply and adapt technical skills and knowledge and use judgment in the provision of beauty treatments and services. These individuals are responsible for their own outputs and provide limited guidance to others. Work is typically conducted in beauty salons and spas.
Entry Requirements
This course is for traineeship training only.
Students must be employed within a beauty salon or spa with the appropriately qualified supervisor/s.
Trainees must be 18 years of age to enrol in the unit SHBBHRS011 Provide female intimate waxing services.
Trainees must bring their own laptop or internet enabled device when attending class as all required resources for learning and assessment are only accessible online via the trainee's Moodle login. A mobile phone is not suitable for this purpose.
Trainees will have access to the e-textbook, "Professional Beauty Therapy", 4th Edition, via their Moodle login. Trainees may choose to purchase their own hard copy textbook direct from Cengage Publishing.
During the sign-up process salons will be required to verify they can meet the training requirements required within individual units. Alternative arrangements can be made if any gaps are identified.
Completion of the bksb (Basic Key Skills Builder) online literacy and numeracy assessment prior to enrolment, unless the student has completed an equal or high level course.

On successful completion you will receive a Certificate IV in Beauty Therapy SHB40121. As a qualified beauty therapist, you could work in beauty salons or spas.
Course Structures
In order to complete this course, you must:

Study Mode Definitions
- Online: Online courses provide the flexibility to study without normally requiring a student to visit a campus. Course content is studied through a number of means including the use of online discussion forums, electronic library resources, by contacting lecturers and teachers, and receiving study materials online/electronically. Work integrated learning, including placements, may be included in some courses.
- On-campus: Students studying in on-campus mode typically are expected to attend and participate in regular, structured on-campus teaching and learning activities throughout the University’s academic term. These activities may include lectures, tutorials, workshops and practice, online or other activities and normally will be timetabled at a CQUniversity campus or approved delivery site.
- Mixed Mode: Students studying in mixed mode will participate in a combination of online learning activities in addition to site-specific learning activities, which may include residential schools, co-op placements and/or work-integrated learning as a compulsory requirement of a unit. The additional site-specific learning activities are what differentiates a mixed-mode unit from an online unit.

Course Assessment Information
RPL - Students who have previous informal and formal learning need to advise their trainer/assessor prior to enrolment. If the student wishes to apply for an RPL they need to apply to the RPL Centre.
Credit transfer - If credit for relevant formal qualifications is sought, then the process will be actioned after the student has enrolled in at least one unit of competency as directed by the relevant trainer/assessor. The Trainer/Assessor will work with the student on their credit transfer application, and provide advice and support as necessary.

On-Campus locations and class times
Mackay City Campus (Building MKC004 Level 1 Beauty Salon)
Rockhampton City Campus (Building B Level 2 Room 2.02 Beauty Salon)
On-Campus Classes: 9am - 4pm, on designated days provided by teachers at each campus.
No classes are held on public or school holidays.
Mandatory Attendance
Attendance at a CQU Training Salon on designated Wednesdays, either, once per fortnight, or designated Wednesdays and Thursdays, once per month, is mandatory.
Students are expected to attend class for the full day.
Without regular attendance student will not successfully progress through this course.
Any alteration to this arrangement must be approved by the Head of Course.
As you will be working in the CQUniversity Training Salon, which may have clients booked for services, attendance is of high importance to both the client and for your own course progression. If you are unable to attend, must leave early or arrive late, it is essential that you contact your teacher ahead of time so alternative arrangements can be made.
Beauty Industry Presentation
Whilst on-campus, students are required to wear the prescribed uniform as listed below and to dress professionally, according to Beauty Industry expectations.
- Tidy hair with long hair secured in a plait, braid or bun.
- Clean, tidy nails and appropriate makeup.
- Minimal jewellery, no midriffs.
Uniform Requirements
Due to Workplace Health and Safety guidelines, you will not be able to participate in practical activities if your uniform is not according to the following uniform requirements:
- One of the following:
o Employing salon’s uniform, or,
o Black tunic available at the beauty wholesalers, uniform shops or online, or,
o Black ‘Beauty Services’ polo shirt ordered from the CQU Bookshop.
- Black full-length or 3/4 length work pants (not leggings or jeans).
- Black enclosed shoes. Choose black joggers or black support shoes. Do not wear ballet flats or heels.
A CQUni apron will be provided to wear in the simulated salon during each practical activity.
The e-Textbook is provided to students at no extra cost
The textbook is available to students on the Moodle Platform as an eBook, as part of the course materials. There is no requirement for students to purchase a hard copy.

Students can access the units on the online Moodle platform approximately two weeks prior to the commencement date of each unit.

Providing services to clients
As part of the course learning and assessment requirements, students must attend class, be willing and prepared to provide treatments to clients under the supervision of the teacher.
Your training salon has a client base however students may need to source their own clients from time to time. It is a good idea to network with your family and friends who can become your clients in our busy training salons.
