Course Details

Course Summary

This qualification reflects the role of hairdressers who use a range of well-developed sales, consultation and technical skills and knowledge to provide a broad range of hairdressing services to clients. They use discretion and judgement to provide client services and take responsibility for the outcomes of their own work. This qualification provides a pathway to work as a hairdresser in any industry environment, usually a salon.


Entry Requirements

Completion of the BKSB (Basic Key Skills Builder) online literacy and numeracy assessment prior to enrolment, unless the student has completed an equal or higher level course.

Prospective students who wish to apply for admission into this course must be employed as an apprentice with a current training contract or be an unemployed apprentice actively looking for employment under a government funded program that allows for continued training.

Prospective students who are not currently employed under an apprenticeship can apply for entry into this course, however, it is advised they contact CQUniversity to make an appointment with a member of the teaching team at their closest location.

This qualification provides a pathway to work as a hairdresser in any industry environment, usually a salon.

Course Structures

In order to complete this course, you must:

  1. Complete 21 core units
  2. Complete 7 elective units

Study Mode Definitions

  • Online: Online courses provide the flexibility to study without normally requiring a student to visit a campus. Course content is studied through a number of means including the use of online discussion forums, electronic library resources, by contacting lecturers and teachers, and receiving study materials online/electronically. Work integrated learning, including placements, may be included in some courses.
  • On-campus: Students studying in on-campus mode typically are expected to attend and participate in regular, structured on-campus teaching and learning activities throughout the University’s academic term. These activities may include lectures, tutorials, workshops and practice, online or other activities and normally will be timetabled at a CQUniversity campus or approved delivery site.
  • Mixed Mode: Students studying in mixed mode will participate in a combination of online learning activities in addition to site-specific learning activities, which may include residential schools, co-op placements and/or work-integrated learning as a compulsory requirement of a unit. The additional site-specific learning activities are what differentiates a mixed-mode unit from an online unit.

Course Assessment Information

RPL - Students who have previous informal and formal learning need to advise their trainer/assessor prior to enrolment. If the student wishes to apply for an RPL they need to apply to the RPL Centre.
Credit transfer - If credit for relevant formal qualifications is sought, then the process will be actioned after the student has enrolled in at least one unit of competency as directed by the relevant trainer/assessor. The Trainer/Assessor will work with the student on their credit transfer application, and provide advice and support as necessary.

Course duration: This course is designed to be completed over 28 months of full time study and students will be required to enrol into 7 units every 6-8 months

 

On-campus Attendance Information

All New students must contact a Teacher on their campus of admission to organise an orientation prior to attending any classes.

No classes are held on public holidays or school holidays.

Resource Requirements

In discussion with teaching staff, additional hairdressing equipment and salon resources will be required for this course. These will be purchased at the expense of the student as study progresses throughout the course. Items include:

  • Stationery – pens, notebook etc
  • 12pk sectioning clips
  • 2 x tail combs
  • Round brushes (thermal) – 1 x 18mm, 1 x 24mm, 1 x 30mm, 1 x 42mm (approx.. measurements)
  • Denman styling brush 7 row
  • TangleTeezer
  • Water spray
  • Wide-toothed basin comb
  • 1 x box of Disposable gloves

As students progress through their course and enrol into different units they will be required to purchase further equipment – eg. Scissors, cutting combs, mannequins. Teachers at each location will advise what needs to be purchased and where these items can be purchased from. 

 

All students must wear closed in shoes and be dressed as though they are going to work in a salon.
