Study Mode Definitions

  • Online: Online courses provide the flexibility to study without normally requiring a student to visit a campus. Course content is studied through a number of means including the use of online discussion forums, electronic library resources, by contacting lecturers and teachers, and receiving study materials online/electronically. Work integrated learning, including placements, may be included in some courses.
  • On-campus: Students studying in on-campus mode typically are expected to attend and participate in regular, structured on-campus teaching and learning activities throughout the University’s academic term. These activities may include lectures, tutorials, workshops and practice, online or other activities and normally will be timetabled at a CQUniversity campus or approved delivery site.
  • Mixed Mode: Students studying in mixed mode will participate in a combination of online learning activities in addition to site-specific learning activities, which may include residential schools, co-op placements and/or work-integrated learning as a compulsory requirement of a unit. The additional site-specific learning activities are what differentiates a mixed-mode unit from an online unit.

*All study modes may include Vocational placement and/or work integrated learning.

Enrolment Information

Clusters of units are available for nine week blocks (enrolment periods) as illustrated on the diagram below.

Literacy & Numeracy Requirements

Students are expected to be able to work at ACSF Level 4 in Literacy and Numeracy. Students who choose to attempt this course without those necessary skills find it difficult to successfully complete this course.

Home PC requirements

Most of the course study is done outside the organised sessions listed below. You’ll need access to a personal computer with Windows 11/10 and internet access, as well as the ability to install Microsoft Office, which is free for CQUniversity students. While not mandatory, a computer that supports Microsoft Hyper-V virtualisation is highly recommended for practicing lab work at home, offering a significant learning benefit.

Compulsory Attendance

Students studying the Small Business Networks, Business Network Administration or the Hardware & Operating Systems clusters must be able to attend compulsory Lab sessions one day per week for the duration of the enrolment period at either the Mackay or Rockhampton City campuses.  Clusters usually have a duration of 9 weeks.

Expected Attendance

Students studying the Thinking Skills, Working in ICT or Application Development & Usage clusters are expected to attend a one-hour weekly Zoom session for each unit. These sessions are generally recorded and available in CQU’s Moodle learning management system.

Study Load

This course requires a considerable commitment to complete.

Full-time study (2 or 3 clusters each block of nine weeks):  30+ hours per week of study is required to complete all units successfully over a period of about 9 months.

Part-time study (One cluster each block of nine weeks):  Completing the course over 1.5 years (Part Time) will require 10-15 hours of study per week.

Start Month.

Cluster 1 - One day per week in IT Lab
plus a weekly online Zoom lesson
