Course Summary

Are you looking to take the next step in your automotive career? By completing AUR20220 Certificate II in Automotive Air Conditioning Technology, you can apply to receive your Automotive Refrigerant Handling Licence from the Australian Refrigerant Council. Undertaking this qualification will provide you with the necessary skills to work safely with automotive air conditioning systems and is a key requirement for securing your refrigerant handling licence.

AUR20220 Certificate II in Automotive Air Conditioning Technology reflects the role of individuals who carry out various tasks involved in the maintenance and repair of air conditioning components and systems in both cars and heavy vehicles within an automotive service and repair environment.

Upon completing this qualification, individuals are eligible to apply for an AAC02 – Refrigerant Handling Licence – Qualified Persons (Automotive Air Conditioning Licence). It is important to note that the scope of the licence depends on the specific units of competency selected. Trainee licences also apply to those handling refrigerants while undertaking training. These licences are regulated by the Australian Refrigeration Council, for additional information individuals should reach out to the Council directly.

Requirements - To Be Eligible

For your application to be considered, you must meet the following entry requirements.

Entry Requirements

Completion of the Basic Key Skills Builder (BKSB) online literacy, numeracy, and digital literacy assessment prior to enrolment, unless the student has completed an equal or higher level course.

A Refrigerant and Air Conditioning (RAC) Trainee Licence must be applied for to undertake this course. The Australian Refrigeration Council (ARC) will require proof of your enrolment to apply. Please refer to https://www.arctick.org/ for fees and further information.

On the first day of training, all students will apply for the RAC Trainee Licence with the assistance of teaching staff and be provided a letter confirming their enrolment.

Qualification acceleration is available to individuals who have completed some or all of the relevant units of competency included in this qualification. Units AURETU103 and AURETU104 may be completed by enrolling in the short course ACC155665.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is available for those with older qualifications. Those holding either the MEM31419 Certificate III in Engineering - Fixed and Mobile Plant Mechanic, MEM30205 Certificate III in Engineering  – Mechanical Trade qualifications. Units AURETU103 and AURETU104 can be completed by enrolling in the short course ACC155665.

Student Outcomes, Career Opportunities and Occupations

Upon completion students will be eligible to apply for a Refrigerant Handling Licence (RHL) with ARC allowing them to service and repair automotive air-conditioning systems. Potential job titles may include Automotive Air Conditioning Serviceperson.

Study Mode Definitions

  • Online: Online courses provide the flexibility to study without normally requiring a student to visit a campus. Course content is studied through a number of means including the use of online discussion forums, electronic library resources, by contacting lecturers and teachers, and receiving study materials online/electronically. Work integrated learning, including placements, may be included in some courses.
  • On-campus: Students studying in on-campus mode typically are expected to attend and participate in regular, structured on-campus teaching and learning activities throughout the University’s academic term. These activities may include lectures, tutorials, workshops and practice, online or other activities and normally will be timetabled at a CQUniversity campus or approved delivery site.
  • Mixed Mode: Students studying in mixed mode will participate in a combination of online learning activities in addition to site-specific learning activities, which may include residential schools, co-op placements and/or work-integrated learning as a compulsory requirement of a unit. The additional site-specific learning activities are what differentiates a mixed-mode unit from an online unit.

Standard Course Structure

Full Time:

Students will complete formal face-to-face training over a five-week (25 days) period at either the Rockhampton City, Mackay or Emerald campuses. Training will be held from 8:00 am to 4:45 pm, Monday to Friday (2:45 pm finish on Fridays).

(Alternative Elective units available under this training package can be negotiated upon enrolment, subject to your completed trade).

Up to 3 units may be from a Certificate I qualification or above in the AUR Training Package or another endorsed Training Package or accredited course.
 Elective units chosen must be relevant to the work environment and the qualification, maintain the overall integrity of the AQF alignment, not duplicate the outcome of another unit chosen for the qualification, and contribute to a valid vocational outcome.

Course Assessment Information

RPL - Students who have previous informal and formal learning need to advise their trainer/assessor prior to enrolment. If the student wishes to apply for an RPL they need to apply to the RPL Centre.
Credit transfer - If credit for relevant formal qualifications is sought, then the process will be actioned after the student has enrolled in at least one unit of competency as directed by the relevant trainer/assessor. The Trainer/Assessor will work with the student on their credit transfer application, and provide advice and support as necessary.
