Course Details

Course Summary

The units in this short course form part of the qualification MEM31419 Certificate III in Engineering - Fixed and Mobile Plant Mechanic and define the skills and knowledge required of an engineering tradesperson - mechanical, specialising in diesel fitting and plant mechanics within metal, engineering, manufacturing and associated industries. The units are the Stage 1 units which are most of the core units required for MEM31419. The skills associated with these units are intended to apply to a wide range of trade work including manufacturing, assembly and commissioning of mobile and stationary plant, servicing, diagnosis and rectification of faults, condition monitoring, and preventative maintenance.


Entry Requirements

1.    Trades assistants and service persons with sound mechanical engineering knowledge and skills may apply through their supervisor to enter into: Stage 1 (an 'Assessment Only') to obtain formal qualifications for knowledge and skills previously learned through on-the-job experience.  

2.    Previous graduates from the FFA with a Certificate II in Engineering and employed as maintenance associates for 12 months may apply through their supervisor to enrol straight into the MA-to-Trade program. 

LLN Assessment is not required for the assessment only pathway

Student Outcomes, Career Opportunities and Occupations

Candidates who complete the required units will move into Stage 2 to be trained and assessed in the gap units. Once completed, the candidate will be eligible to apply for the MA-to-Trade Apprenticeship program. (MEM31419)

Delivery Agreement

Stage 1 (an 'assessment only' process) to obtain formal qualifications for knowledge and skills previously learned through on-the-job experience. This process usually takes between four and six months depending on demand and requires attendance at the FutureFit Academy for four or five cycles (over two blocks). Please refer to 'Assessment Only Pathway - Information Guide v2 FINAL' for more information.  This process will be conducted by trainers at BHPOS FutureFit Academy in Mackay under a third party agreement.

Study Mode Definitions

  • Online: Online courses provide the flexibility to study without normally requiring a student to visit a campus. Course content is studied through a number of means including the use of online discussion forums, electronic library resources, by contacting lecturers and teachers, and receiving study materials online/electronically. Work integrated learning, including placements, may be included in some courses.
  • On-campus: Students studying in on-campus mode typically are expected to attend and participate in regular, structured on-campus teaching and learning activities throughout the University’s academic term. These activities may include lectures, tutorials, workshops and practice, online or other activities and normally will be timetabled at a CQUniversity campus or approved delivery site.
  • Mixed Mode: Students studying in mixed mode will participate in a combination of online learning activities in addition to site-specific learning activities, which may include residential schools, co-op placements and/or work-integrated learning as a compulsory requirement of a unit. The additional site-specific learning activities are what differentiates a mixed-mode unit from an online unit.

Course Assessment Information

RPL - Students who have previous informal and formal learning need to advise their trainer/assessor prior to enrolment. If the student wishes to apply for an RPL they need to apply to the RPL Centre.
Credit transfer - If credit for relevant formal qualifications is sought, then the process will be actioned after the student has enrolled in at least one unit of competency as directed by the relevant trainer/assessor. The Trainer/Assessor will work with the student on their credit transfer application, and provide advice and support as necessary.
