Unit Synopsis
In this unit, you will continue work initiated in SPCH14002 Honours Research Practicum 1 in which you identified a gap in the field of speech pathology, and further your critical thinking and analytical skills through the completion of your research project. You will apply knowledge learned through critical appraisal of the literature and analysis of data to a specific range of practice area in speech pathology, using reflective practice principles to make recommendations for evidence based practice within that area. You will apply academic conventions to oral and written communication of your research outcomes.

Unit Availabilities from Term 1 - 2026
Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
Recommended Student Time Commitment
Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.
Assessment Tasks
| Assessment Task | Weighting |
|---|---|
| 1. Written Assessment | 20% |
| 2. Written Assessment | 50% |
| 3. Presentation | 30% |
This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Term 2 - 2018 : The overall satisfaction for students in the last offering of this course was 100.00% (`Agree` and `Strongly Agree` responses), based on a 42.86% response rate.
Feedback, Recommendations and Responses
Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.
Source: Have Your Say Academic team planning and review feedback
Students have reported over successive years that the workload requirements for this unit are excessive, especially as the unit is only offered in Term 2, at the same time as their work-integrated learning block placements.
The feedback from students has been considered during the re-alignment of the CB87 Bachelor of Speech Pathology (Honours) curriculum due for implementation in 2018-2020. The learning outcomes, the expectations and criteria for assessment tasks, and the timing of assessment tasks will be reviewed by the unit coordinator prior to the next offering of SPCH14004.
As part of the curriculum realignment, this unit will no longer be offered at the same time as block clinical placements beginning 2019. To assist students with workload in 2018, the unit coordinator added additional hours to each class in the weeks they were on campus; using that time to help students complete data analyses in the student computer labs. The unit coordinator also contacted students regularly while they were on block placement to offer assistance.

The assessment tasks required review mid-term as students reported the assessment tasks and rubrics continued to be confusing.
The assessment tasks, guides and rubrics will be reviewed to clarify the expectations of the assessment tasks. These expectations will also be communicated to the students at the beginning of the unit.
The instructions and rubrics for all three assessment tasks were new this year and received positively by students.

Students identified that they appreciated the extra time and learning resources which assisted them to grasp new research concepts.
The unit will continue to provide structured and authentic learning experiences which assist the students to grasp new research concepts.
The unit coordinator requested the class be scheduled in a computer lab to allow for demonstration of statical analyses, and face to face assistance with SPSS.

The rate of student feedback for SPCH14004 has been low. Given the small enrolment numbers, high return rates are particularly important when reviewing this unit.
The unit coordinator will remind students through the Moodle site and email to complete the Have Your Say feedback before the end of the survey period.
The unit coordinator sent two emails through the Moodle site to remind students to complete the Have Your Say feedback throughout the survey period.

The lecturer set achievable expectations and provided feedback in a timely manner.
The lecturer will continue to review expectations for all assessment tasks and provide feedback in a timely manner, allowing student to apply feedback for continuous improvement.

Would benefit from more resources, such as a textbook about how to write a research report.
The unit coordinator will reconsider textbooks for next year. If adding an additional text is not feasible, the lecturer will redirect students to the lecture notes that outline what is expected in each section of a research paper as well as the examples provided.
In Progress
On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:
- Determine appropriate clinical interventions based on research outcomes
- Synthesise and report research outcomes in the form of a written manuscript
- Present research outcomes to clinicians and other stakeholders
- Reflect on your research practice in accordance with Competency-Based Occupational Standards for Speech Pathologists (CBOS, 2011).
