Unit Synopsis
This unit will provide you with an understanding of the environmental and cultural factors that control and modify behaviour. Theories of behaviour including Classical, Operant and Social/Observational Learning approaches are examined and discussed in relation to both animal and human research. Theories of behaviour modification will also be considered within the health context. There is a focus on applying theory to real-world situations and critically evaluating published research relevant to each topic. The latter half of the unit takes the theoretical approaches covered in the first 8 weeks and applies them to modifying behaviour within real-world situations such as intimate partner violence, drug use/abuse, and psychological disorders (e.g., Eating Disorders).

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
Recommended Student Time Commitment
Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Some students felt that the time provided for the online test was too short.
Review the number of questions in the online test.
The number of long answer questions in the online test was reduced from 10 to 2, allowing students to focus on high quality longer answers.

Some students felt that the instructions for the essay were too long.
Review the amount of information given on the requirements of the essay, as well as producing a checklist.
A checklist was made and more support was given in tutorials as to how to approach the essay.

Students expressed disappointment that the unit will not run again as a stand-alone unit.
Since this unit has been discontinued and will therefore not be included in the core structure of the revised psychology courses being implemented in 2022, learning and behaviour modification content will be incorporated into relevant locations in other units within the new structure.
