General Information

Unit Synopsis

This unit is the second of three (3) clinical placement units within the Bachelor of Paramedic Science Course. The unit requires you to apply clinical knowledge and skills at an Intermediate level in a clinical setting with an approved provider. You will engage in reflective practice activities to support self-directed learning, demonstrate your competency of newly acquired skills and work on areas for improvement identified during your first clinical placement unit.

Pre requisites:

  • PMSC12002 Clinical Paramedic Practice 1
  • PMSC12003 Special Populations in Paramedic Practice
  • PMSC12005 Paramedic Medical Emergencies 2

Please note: Any student who has not successfully completed a PMSC residential school within the preceding 12 months or undertaken a clinical placement unit, must complete a PMSC12001 Procedures & Skills refresher. This ensures currency with all contemporary skills and procedures in line with industry standards and professional capabilities.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Feedback
it was stated that there was discussion between unit lecturers on due dates of assignment pieces to minimise clashes of dates, however, often assignment pieces were due alongside others from other units. Therefore, it felt as though this expectation was not adhered to.
Recommendation
Whole of discipline to collectively ensure that assessments are staggered along with due dates and times for consistency whilst ensuring students are not overloaded at specific times of the term.
Action Taken
Actioned. All unit coordinators collectively ageed to due dates being a Monday at 9 am Queensland time, and improved coordination was facilitated by the Head of Course to ensure a collective focus on assessment due dates to maximise the student experience.

Feedback
A great placement experience and unit content felt on point. I still feel like the document submission process on Sonia needs some tweaking for ease of use it would be nice if all placement documents required for completion/ checks were available in a neat tidy folder with a search bar (think like library format/ database). Overall happy student.
Recommendation
Work with WIL team to streamline access and searching functionality for students.

Achieved and no reports of difficulties for any students. This was achieved with increased Zoom sessions to discuss the issue, and the development an assessment FAQ document to allow students to familiarise themselves after hours.

Feedback
The grand rounds presentation was somewhat unclear and confusing. Additional information about the requirements would have been useful. While the need to explain and demonstrate an understanding of the placement content was understood, it seemed like a significant financial burden if the assessment was based solely on a pass/fail system.
Recommendation
From 2025, the Grand Rounds assessment is to be removed and replaced with a Portfolio assessment to develop a contemporary view focusing on both cultural and vulnerable clients.

Feedback
The inclusion of an additional section in the Clinical Supervisor Assessment report to include general comments from supervisors and not related to a negative event would be very helpful.
Recommendation
From 2025, the Clinical Supervisor Assessment will provide greater opportunities for Clinical Supervisors to provide feedback including both positive and constructive commentary.

Provide mentor training for paramedics supervising students so there is a standardised structure to teaching students.
Recommendation
From 2025, all placement providers (site level) will receive a pre-placement welcome pack which will include clarity surrounding upcoming placement, expectations and supportive documentation.

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Apply clinical reasoning and practical skills at an Intermediate level within the clinical setting whilst working collaboratively with allied health professionals
  2. Revise reflective practice principles associated with clinical reasoning and conduct whilst supporting diverse groups in the health care setting
  3. Analyse legal responsibilities and requirements, ethical and professional responsibilities and the legal and ethical boundaries of paramedicine practice.

It is a requirement of the Paramedicine Board of Australia that units align with the AHPRA professional capabilities for registered paramedics. These are broken down into five (5) domains. Below aligns the proposed learning outcomes with these domains. In addition, the learning outcomes have also been aligned with the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards.
