Unit Synopsis
In this unit you will gain theoretical knowledge in dental materials, restorative procedures and local anaesthetic pharmacology and techniques. You will also translate and integrate this knowledge in a simulated environment while fulfilling workplace health and safety, equipment maintenance and record management requirements. On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to demonstrate practical skills in local anaesthetic techniques and dental restorations in adults of all ages in a simulated environment. You will be able to display appropriate interpersonal / team communication skills, professional attitudes and ethical behaviours. You will be required to attend a two-week compulsory intensive program prior to the commencement of Term 1.

Pre-requisites: BMSC11011 Human Anatomy and Physiology 2 and ORAL11003 Introduction to Oral Disease and ORAL11005 Oral Anatomy 2 and ORAL11006 Introduction to Oral Health Practice Co-requisites: ORAL12001 Oral Disease Prevention and Management and ORAL12003 Oral Health Clinical Practice 1 Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
Recommended Student Time Commitment
Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Students have requested that educator presentations be reviewed to ensure consistency in content details across simulation procedures.
It is recommended to review and update lecture content prior to Term 1, 2026 to align with new materials introduced in the on-campus dental clinic.
The lecture content was reviewed over Term 3 and the updated content was delivered in Term 1, 2026. The new content aligned with the material updates in the CQU Oral Health Clinic.

The unit coordinator needs to be attending and delivering lectures.
It is recommended that, subject to timetable availability, the unit coordinator be allocated to deliver the dental materials component of the subject in future terms.
The Unit coordinator was allocated time to revise the Dental Materials content prior to the In-Class test. The Unit Coordinator was also able to be in contact with students at least 1 x weekly during their simulation classes.

Students have requested more engagement with real teeth in the simulated environment to give them a more accurate insight to the anatomy rather than the tyopdont plastic teeth.
It is recommended to explore more time in the sessions for students to explore the real teeth.

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:
- Discuss the theoretical basis of dental materials, restorative procedures, and local anaesthetic pharmacology and techniques in the management of oral diseases
- Apply the principles of local anaesthetic pharmacology and techniques in the simulated environment
- Apply knowledge and skills of dental materials and cavity preparation for dental restorations in the simulated environment
- Recognise and act upon the legal, ethical and safeguarding issues involving dental practitioners and patients as defined by the relevant professional regulatory bodies in Australia and overseas
All unit profiles in the Bachelor of Oral Health are made available to the Australian Dental Council for on-going accreditation purposes.
