OCCT13007 - Enabling Mental Health

Showing: 2026 HE Term 2
General Information

Unit Synopsis

In this unit, you will develop a set of mental health practice capabilities (knowledge, skills and attitudes) for application across a range of service settings, recognising that mental health practice is within the scope of all registered occupational therapists. The knowledge and skills gained in this unit will enhance your understanding of inclusivity and diversity in mental health practice across the lifespan, acknowledging that practice may include non-family carers, support persons and significant others of the client/individual/person. This unit will support you to understand assessment and treatment within the context of overarching practice frameworks, mental health policies, legislation, standards, recovery principles, trauma-informed practice, and ethical issues.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Assessment Overview

Recommended Student Time Commitment

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task Weighting
1. Oral Examination 15%
2. Presentation 40%
3. Online Test 45%

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Previous Feedback

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Source: SUTE comments
Feedback:
Some students found the volume of work in the self-paced activities to be challenging.

Recommendation:
It is recommended that self-paced content is reviewed with consideration to structure it in a way that breaks it up into smaller components.

Action Taken:
This was reviewed for the 2026 offering, with additional structure included in the self-paced components, breaking learning up into smaller components.
Source: SUTE data
Feedback:
A number of students expressed their enjoyment about this unit but indicated they would enjoy it even more with additional in-class workshop time, rather than the scheduled periodic all-day workshops.

Recommendation:
It is recommended that the unit coordinator timetable regular workshops in T1 2027, in consultation with HMAS-Admin and Education Scheduling. Within this timetable update, the design of the flipped classroom will remain, but more regular opportunities for case-based application of theory will occur in these workshops.

Feedback:
The final online test, which has been running for years, after being converted from a handwritten invigilated test, needs to be reviewed for AI security and to ensure it is the best way for LO achievement to be determined.

Recommendation:
It is recommended that the Unit Coordinator investigates converting this assessment to an OSCE or Interactive Oral Examination to optimise meeting the mapped learning outcomes but also to uphold AI security.
