NURS29015 - Correctional Nursing and Global Priorities

General Information

Unit Synopsis

In this unit, you will explore global priorities for the health of people engaged with correctional systems. These priorities are closely linked to broader public health and human rights objectives, aiming to improve the health and well-being of incarcerated populations, reduce systemic inequities, and mitigate the wider impact of incarceration on public health. You will examine how incarceration shapes public health and international efforts to address health disparities within prison systems. Through this, you will explore ethical dilemmas, public health concerns, and the intersection of social justice, human rights, and healthcare within correctional settings. You will examine the practical application of global standards, principles of health equity, and healthcare approaches for incarcerated populations in Australia, with a focus on the role of nurses in operationalising global health priorities within correctional settings
