Unit Synopsis

This unit provides an opportunity to examine leadership in healthcare, drawing on foundational concepts of leadership and their application in healthcare. This unit builds on generic leadership theory and facilitates translation to sector-specific application. The unit focuses on both personal and professional development and effectiveness. Throughout the unit, you will analyse various leadership theories, styles, and approaches, examining their relevance and impact within healthcare systems, and other systems, services, and teams. You will evaluate the capabilities necessary for effective leadership in healthcare and explore strategies to develop these including those that foster collaboration, drive change and promote systemic improvements and innovation in healthcare. Additionally, you will reflect on and discuss strategies to lead and negotiate change, ensuring smooth and beneficial transitions for all stakeholders. Finally, we will critically analyse contemporary and future challenges for healthcare leadership, considering the global context and the evolving role of leaders in a rapidly changing industry. This includes the need to anticipate, prepare for, and adapt to emerging trends and challenges amid technological, economic, social and environmental shifts. By the end of this unit, you will have a comprehensive understanding of leadership in healthcare, applicable across a range of healthcare systems and settings.
