NURS20180 - Mental Health Promotion

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This unit examines mental health promotion and illness prevention, which aims to raise awareness of mental health issues, improve mental health literacy, reduce stigma and discrimination, and maximise a population's mental health and well-being. You will critique the national and international strategic direction for mental health promotion and examine the key theoretical concepts, principles, and models used to empower diverse people and populations to improve their mental health and well-being. You will also appraise the impact of the social determinants of health on diverse population groups, assess risk and protective factors, and discuss the early intervention strategies used by mental health nurses to support people who experience mental health problems. Finally, you will evaluate the progress made to reduce mental health inequities for priority populations, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, rural Australians, and people with culturally and linguistically diverse and refugee backgrounds.
