Unit Synopsis
Approaches to mental health care have developed dramatically in the past 150 years. From containment and custodial-based care, mental health nurses now aspire to therapeutic approaches that are person-centred, goal-oriented, collaborative and evidence-based. This unit explores specialist techniques intentionally used to create ease, promote self-understanding and motivate pathways to recovery within specific mental health contexts. You will research, discuss and apply traditional and emerging psychosocial approaches such as cognitive behaviour therapy, solution focused counselling, open diaologue and other group therapies. An opportunity to focus your inquiry into one or more specialist services, where advanced techniques are emphasised, will be provided.

Recommended Student Time Commitment
Each 6-credit Postgraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Term 2 - 2019 : The overall satisfaction for students in the last offering of this course was 100.00% (`Agree` and `Strongly Agree` responses), based on a 20% response rate.
Feedback, Recommendations and Responses
Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Students appreciated being able to select their own therapeutic intervention to investigate and practise.
Assessment tasks where possible should allow students to choose their own topic.
Students were given one-on-one zoom sessions to assist in discussing, selecting and developing portfolio topics.

The Practice Portfolio was tricky to put together. I did not like using Mahara, it was time consuming and I struggled to upload files. It was disjointed.
Unit coordinator to provide more guidance and assistance to students in using Mahara or investigate introducing alternative portfolio software.

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:
- Analyse a range of psychosocial approaches, including their assumptions, aims and methods
- Apply evidence based practice to recommend a specific therapeutic approach
- Evaluate advanced therapeutic care that is planned and implemented collaboratively
- Demonstrate and evaluate the use of advanced approaches within specialised areas.
This unit is one of the units offered in the Graduate Diploma of Mental Health Nursing (CC69). The Graduate Diploma is provisionally accredited by the Australian College of Mental Health Nursing. The College will be notified of these changes. As there are no fundamental changes to the unit, it is unlikely that accreditation will be affected.
