General Information

Unit Synopsis

This unit is aimed at developing and applying fundamental assessment and nursing skills applicable to all settings and age groups. The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia standards for practice for the registered nurse are used as a framework to guide you in relation to person-centred care, patient safety, cultural safety, and developing practice. You will have the opportunity to develop effective clinical reasoning skills at a beginning level that enable you to perform an accurate systems-based health assessment for the collection of data in order to plan and review nursing interventions. In this you unit you will also apply principles of asepsis, wound management and safe medication administration in simulated and clinical settings. You will be expected to function within the scope of practice of a nursing student in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) registered nurse standards for practice during the compulsory three (3) day residential school or timetabled internal clinical classes in preparation for your 120 hour clinical placement.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

The teachers were all lovely. They responded in a timely manner whenever you had a questions as well for marking the assessment. Res schools went very well and helped prepare me for placement greatly. I was still nervous for placement but res school made me feel confident in what i was doing. The assessment on suture and staple remove i found was a great scenario to do. This has been one of my favourite units so far, due to the teachers attitude and support

Support will continue in res school, on placement and with timely responses to forums, emails and phone calls

Res schools continued face to face during the term. A res school for interstate students who could not attend a face to face res school was held in Brisbane in term 1 on the day prior to students attending PEP2 res school

The information provided throughout this unit was very informative, also broken up with the odd video clips for amusement/amazement, reinforcing information and catchy music was appreciated. Thank you Sandy, your presentation style, lived experience and honesty was awesome, I always looked forward to each Thursdays lecture recording just to hear you speak. The assistance and follow up replies to email inquiries was timely and appreciated. Regards

Maybe a little more discussion on the ANSAT tool used for placement.
Recommendation
Clearer instruction on use of the tool is provided at residentials or during on campus classes, and in lectures.

Feedback
The assessments I feel were a lot to juggle towards the end of term. I feel that either the reflection OR exam aren't necessary for my learning
Recommendation
Both the reflection and the exam remain to suit different learning styles. Both are necessary in an effort to ensure that fundamental learning has occurred
Action Taken
Students who have placements later in the term are affected by having assessments close together. Due to COVID the invigilated exam was changed to an on line summative quiz and the students were given 5 days to complete the quiz on a day that suited them.

I find that going on placement during the term is quite difficult on top of everything else and you can feel like you don't have enough knowledge for placement as you haven't covered all the topics in the unit yet. I found on placement, one week with the AINs is plenty enough. A week with the RNs as well would be much more beneficial than only one day.
Recommendation
Placement dates rely on facility availability so outside of CQUniversity control. As the majority of placements are in Aged Care Facilities, the availability of RNs on duty does not allow more time for one on one with students. A registered nurse facilitator is available on site and students are able to contact their unit coordinators if they have any questions during their placement.

The flour exercise completed in Residential school was well done in order to assist with the task of hand hygiene. It was also interesting in demonstrating how contaminants can easily spread as well, with multiple students inadvertently touching uniforms while waiting for the flour to dry following application.
Recommendation
This activity was new for this term and was successful. I will continue to use this activity to teach hand hygiene to students

The weekly lectures and Q&A sessions were very helpful and the fact they we're recorded. I loved the layout of the moodle page easy to navigate (anti teams). RES school was also a great learning experience, I found Nakia extremely supportive to have on placement popping in and for assessments and feedback.

The assessment tasks are too large for the subject. Having to do full time placement plus a large amount of content and multiple assessments for one subject only when some of us may be doing other subjects and working is too much. Also I was placed at a facility that was not fit for hosting students, causing me to dislike the subject
Recommendation
The Unit had 4 assessment tasks, 2 completed during res school. The third assessment was clinical placement with associated ANSAT Tool and reflection. There was an on line summative quiz in week 12 of term
