Unit Synopsis
Managers work with and through others in a variety of organisational structures, each with a set of internal contextual factors. In this unit you will critically examine the role of individuals, groups and managers in the performance outcomes of organisations in a dynamic environment. You will examine the context of organisations as structural frames and the different cultures, political networks and human resource processes that emerge and how these affect the management of people. The unit addresses key competencies required of managers to effectively work with and through others, including teamwork, empathy and trust, and conflict management. Using reflective practice as the basis for personal development, you will be required to examine, develop and acquire the conceptual knowledge, behavioural skills and attitudinal components needed to be an effective manager.

Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
Recommended Student Time Commitment
Each 6-credit Postgraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.
Assessment Tasks
| Assessment Task | Weighting |
|---|---|
| 1. Learning logs / diaries / Journal / log books | 30% |
| 2. Reflective Practice Assignment | 30% |
| 3. Group Work | 40% |
This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses
Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Learning log assessment task is still relatively new in the unit. It's effectiveness in terms of both engaging students and helping them to meet the Unit Learning Outcomes should be monitored.
Continue to monitor how the learning log assessment task is implemented within the unit, and assess student engagement with the task as well as student performance.
The learning log task appears to be a successful way of ensuring student engagement. The weighting it is currently given may need to be adjusted though.

Case studies for assessment 3 need to be regularly refreshed to avoid academic misconduct
Students are provided with a case study on an existing company as part of assessment 3. These case studies should be continually refreshed to ensure that students are not using assignments from previous terms to assist in their preparation for the assignment.
Case studies are refreshed each term to ensure academic integrity and contemporary content.

Weighting of the learning log task
The weighting for the learning log task should be reduced from 30 to 20 percent, as this more adequately reflects the volume of work required.

Review course for real-world examples to ensure relevance
Review opportunities to provide real world examples during weekly workshops and in the assessment tasks so that the unit is not too theory-driven, but also has real-world relevance.
