Unit Synopsis

This clinical placement unit is the third of four that provides you with midwifery clinical experience. You will apply your knowledge of highly complex physiological and psychosocial factors that impact upon the childbearing continuum. In addition to this, you will employ midwifery knowledge, cultural safety, and inclusivity in the care of marginalised groups such as women experiencing substance misuse, and/or incarceration, refugee and immigrant women, or members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, or Queer (LGBTQ+) community. The clinical practicum component of this unit will require you to complete a minimum of 224 hours in addition to Continuity of Care Experiences (COCE).

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 12-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 25 hours of study per week, making a total of 300 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback
The feedback was harsh yet the marking was great, it didn't seem to equal each other. I appreciate the feedback and marks they just didn't seem to match each other.
Recommendation
Upon release of assessment item grades the unit coordinator will remind students via email that they are welcome to engage in informal discussion with the marker or unit coordinator to clarify any misunderstandings or perceived inconsistencies.
Action Taken
The unit coordinator consistently invited students to engage in informal discussions with either the marker or the coordinator to clarify any misunderstandings or perceived inconsistencies. However, no students chose to participate or expressed interest in this opportunity.

Feedback
The unit coordinator provides the students with more than enough content and support to enable the students to succeed in assessment tasks.
Recommendation
The unit will continue to offer weekly Zoom drop-in sessions and scheduled assessment discussion Zoom sessions. The unit coordinator will continue to provide updated resources on Moodle to support the completion of assessments.
Action Taken
In 2024, weekly Zoom drop-in sessions and scheduled assessment discussion sessions continued. Students were encouraged to start their assessments early and to seek feedback from the unit coordinator if they needed additional guidance.

The therapeutic section of the midwifery practice reflective portfolios seem really repetitive.
Recommendation
The format of the reflective portfolio assessment task will be revised to clarify assessment expectations and minimise repetition.

The assessment time of 16:00 hrs does not work for most students.
Recommendation
Students in this cohort were previously accustomed to assessment due times of 11:55 p.m. during Term 1 of 2024. Transitioning to a 4:00 p.m. deadline may have posed a challenge to their study planning. However, all units in the 2025 course offering will have a consistent 4:00 p.m. due time, which may help eliminate this issue.
