HAGE11002 - Predictors of Healthy Ageing

General Information

Unit Synopsis

In this unit, you will analyse the impact of chronic health conditions affecting the older person and the impact of these on society. Perceptions of ageing often embrace the adage ‘to be old is to be sick’, however many older people continue to live in the community functioning well, but at a high risk of disease and disability. An understanding of the normal processes of ageing along with an understanding of age-related changes to body systems will be the main focus of this unit. By considering the major causes of poor health and illness in older Australians, you will also identify and explore opportunities for prevention of illness and promotion of health. This will include dementia and cognitive decline as an area of focus as these are set to become a more prominent health issue of future ageing populations. You will also appraise the key differences in ageing and chronic disease and disability for marginalised groups of older people including Indigenous Australians.
