Unit Synopsis
Aircraft are built using a wide variety of materials and hardware, and they are maintained using tools and standard practices. This unit covers the materials and hardware, and maintenance practices modules of the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) Part 66 Aircraft Maintenance basic knowledge requirements syllabus. In this unit, you will develop knowledge of the materials and also develop skills in their use, carried out with safety precautions as a high priority. You will learn the fundamentals of design and construction of aerospace vehicles and the hardware used for structure and systems. You will learn about damage tolerance and repair techniques, plus common materials used in transmissions, control cables and electrical hardware, developing an understanding of engineering drawings, electrical wiring standards, aircraft handling, riveting, welding and soldering. You will also develop hands-on skills in these maintenance practices, using a variety of examples, gaining practical experience with different types of procedures, components and systems. This unit is delivered at Aviation Australia campuses by Aviation Australia staff.

Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
Recommended Student Time Commitment
Each 12-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 25 hours of study per week, making a total of 300 hours for the unit.

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:
- Describe the characteristics, properties, identification, inspection and testing of aircraft ferrous metal, non-ferrous metal, composite and other non-metallic structural materials
- Explain the nature and causes of corrosion, its identification, inspection and impact on maintenance processes
- Describe the characteristics, properties, identification, manufacture and inspection of aircraft components
- Describe safety precautions to be followed in the standard workshop activities, including knowledge and use of tools and test equipment
- Interpret engineering drawings and relevant standards to determine fits and clearances and other hardware inspection limits
- Explain the processes of riveting, welding, soldering, bonding, manufacture of control cables, and material handling for sheet metal, composite and other non-metallic materials
- Describe electrical wiring interconnection systems standards used for the manufacture, installation, maintenance and repair of electrical wiring
- Describe the aircraft handling and storage including maintenance of aircraft components, disassembly, inspection, repair and assembly techniques
- Safely perform practical tasks following maintenance procedures using tools, hardware, simulation equipment and aircraft components and systems, demonstrating the appropriate application of theory.
