ENAR11001 - Resource Geology

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This unit is an introduction to geological resources - metals, minerals, coal, oil and gas, and construction materials. It prepares you to assess, and effectively communicate the geological setting, quality and grade of geological resources. The unit balances this with consideration of infrastructure and methods of accessing and extracting the geological resources in a socially, culturally and environmentally responsible manner. You will work individually and collaboratively to consider resource geology issues. You will investigate resource geology in a defined context and carry out standard sampling strategies and apply techniques for locating resources, grade control and resource estimation.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Assessment Overview

Recommended Student Time Commitment

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task Weighting
1. Written Assessment 25%
2. Written Assessment 25%
3. Presentation 20%
4. Written Assessment 30%

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Source: Self/staff reflection
Feedback
To seek new case study material to offer as teaching examples to students.
Recommendation
Continue to seek new material and case studies from mining literature for teaching.
Action Taken
New resource materials and case studies are added to each offering.
Source: Student comments from previous years
Feedback
Add a field trip.
Recommendation
Will consider if enrolment numbers increase.
Action Taken
Unable to offer a field trip for a single student in 2021 but will undertake a field trip when enrolment numbers increase. COVID-19 travel restrictions in 2021 also impinged upon field trip offerings.
Source: Mineral Council of Australia/Industry feedback
Feedback
To offer an introduction to indigenous perspectives during the exploration phase of the mining cycle.
Recommendation
Will include this in the 2021 offering of this unit.
Action Taken
This content was successfully presented and new material was introduced in 2021
Source: Verbal communication.
Feedback
To offer a field trip with mine visit.
Recommendation
Will offer a Residential School with a field trip for updated offering, ENAR13001 Economic Geology in 2022.

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Discuss the fuel, ore and industrial mineral resources in Australia
  2. Identify and describe fuel, ore and industrial minerals and the typical characteristics of such mineral deposits
  3. Describe mineral exploration methods and their application
  4. Describe processes used to evaluate and quantify mineral reserves
  5. Identify impacts of mining exploration in a socially, culturally and environmentally sensitive manner
  6. Prepare project reports and demonstrate an effective, professional level of teamwork and communication, and support collaborative peer group learning.

This unit assists students to develop the Engineers Australia Stage 1 competencies for Engineering Associates targeting knowledge and skill base, engineering application ability and professional and personal attributes.
