Unit Synopsis
Knowing and understanding literacy and numeracy teaching strategies and their application to teaching areas in secondary schools is the focus of this unit. In this unit you will learn how to identify literacy and numeracy needs of secondary school students so you are able to implement learning activities to address appropriate learning requirements for individuals and groups. You will explore contemporary strategies and approaches to teaching literacy and numeracy to enable you to plan, assess and report on individual student literacy and numeracy capabilities. You will investigate the techniques that will enable you to identify the specific literacy and numeracy deficiencies that students may have, so you are able to provide appropriate learning support. Pedagogical strategies to address the needs of learners in literacy and numeracy are developed, to enable the appropriate design, implementation and evaluation of teaching, learning and assessment strategies, that facilitate and enhance student learning. This unit also requires the development and maintenance of your personal literacy and numeracy skills together with critically reflective practices to enhance your professional learning.

Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
Recommended Student Time Commitment
Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.
Assessment Tasks
| Assessment Task | Weighting |
|---|---|
| 1. Online Quiz(zes) | 40% |

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

The assessment structure of this unit was great for distance students. Having the quizzes the way they were allowed me to ask the lecturer any questions i had before having to take the quiz.
The unit assessment order will be maintained.
The quizzes remained at the end of the course

The task sheet for assessment task 1 needs to be made clearer in exactly what is required of us to do.
Provide a more concise task sheet for assessment 1.
The task sheet was clarified, and more details were provided describing how to achieve the goals of the task.

Example lesson plans, or example activities of numeracy/literacy activities among all specialties would help to demonstrate the type of work the assignment is after.
The unit should add exemplars.
In Progress

The main assessment in the middle of the term, followed by 2 x weekly quizzes was revolutionary in my view.
The structure of the unit will be maintained.
In Progress

The unit evaluations went down slightly. I think the evaluations went down slightly because the students did not like the LANTITE questions on the quizzes.
I have made some quiz question changes based on the issues students mentioned. I have also added an in person component to the class in Bundaberg, so I can create activities on how to prepare students for the quizzes better.
