Unit Synopsis

This unit provides you with a fundamental understanding of accounting concepts and practices across various aspects of business operations. You will explore how accounting information is utilised by managers to plan, control, and support business operations and strategic decision-making. A systematic approach to gathering, analysing and reporting financial information is essential for sound business decision-making. In this unit, you will apply theoretical accounting principles to real-world scenarios, analysing information to support decision-making, evaluate historical performance, and plan future activities. The unit covers both financial and management accounting. Financial accounting focuses on producing basic financial statements to analyse the underpinning concepts and accounting procedures. In contrast, management accounting is concerned with controlling cost and profit planning, enabling the application of financial data to support decision-making for routine and non-routine business activities. You will acquire knowledge of accounting terms and practices, ensuring the clear communication of standardised financial and non-financial information to relevant stakeholders. Additionally, you will gain an understanding of accounting practices within ethical, professional, organisational and social contexts.

Each 6-credit Postgraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).
