General Information

Unit Synopsis

This unit provides an introduction to technical and compliance aspects of commercial sector building maintenance and re-use, and the role of the construction manager including: the application and relevance of Post Occupancy Evaluations; introduction to common building pathologies and their treatment; role of construction detailing in life cycle building maintenance including construction for disassembly; introduction to principles of auditing of both infrastructure and services; retrofitting of building fabric and services (including heritage buildings).

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Learning resources were not always helpful or easily available.
Recommendation
New materials and a study guide have been developed and delivered for 2022. These resources are now easily accessible from a 'resources' moodle tile.

The Moodle page was difficult to navigate.
Recommendation
The CQU Moodle layout was refreshed in 2022, and the unit learning material and information will be allocated accordingly over the next year. A short video will be recorded for the Week 1 introduction to demonstrate Moodle navigation for students.

The Moodle was refreshed in line with the school's standard simplified layout for ease of navigation.

Tutorials were not recorded or posted to view late.
Recommendation
All tutorials attended by students were recorded. Students are encouraged to attend and participate in the learning discussions.

Students attended most tutorials thus more were recorded. MS Teams replaced many students' main communication routes.

Students who adopted the use of the MS team and the offer of the lecturer reviewing a draft of the assignment before submission performed better.
Recommendation
The review of draft assignments will continue to be offered to all students as this provides additional learning support. The MS Team for the unit will continue to an important communication route, providing timely and personal support.

A slightly more detailed rubrics will be provided, although care is needed not to almost answer the questions. A degree of flexibility is provided for students to incorporate their experience in the answers.
