BLAR12054 - Structural Design Processes

General Information

Unit Synopsis

In this unit, you will be introduced to basic systems and calculations applied to structures of residential and commercial buildings. You will then extend your understanding of fundamental concepts and principles by referring to structural drawings and computational methods associated with various structures including timber, reinforced concrete and steel structures. The unit learning will cover essential knowledge areas of structural mechanics including loading and load paths, support systems, determinate and indeterminate structures, main structural elements (e.g. beams, columns), tension members and compression members. By the end of this unit, you will have developed a sound understanding of the application of design processes for common structures.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Assessment Overview

Recommended Student Time Commitment

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Tasks

This information will not be available until 8 weeks before term.
To see assessment details from an earlier availability, please search via a previous term.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Source: Moodle unit evaluation
Feedback
Informative. It was a good grounding in the design of structural elements using the formulae in the Australian Standards.
Recommendation
Good to know that the content was useful towards learning progress and knowledge development.
Action Taken
Same level of quality content was delivered in the year T1, 2018.

Feedback
This unit is totally irrelevant to Building Designers and Surveyors.
Recommendation
Noted the comment. However, unit’s content is based on the requirement of the relevant accrediting institutions' guidelines and graduate attributes. The unit content was checked by relevant department and assessment items were linked to learning outcomes and learning outcomes were linked to unit’s content.
Action Taken
The same content was continued for this year as the content was relevant to building students.

Feedback
I struggled with maths and one-to-one Zoom session helped. At the end understood the content well, maybe it is my own confidence issues.
Recommendation
Thanks for the feedback. Nice to see Lecturer helped the student/s to his level best.
