General Information

Unit Synopsis

This unit introduces students to construction principles and methods for commercial and industrial buildings, which fall under Class 2 to 9 of the Building Code of Australia, concentrating on low-rise construction and buildings with load-bearing walls up to three stories in height. This unit provides a background to the following for the construction of these classes of buildings: principles of fire safety, inspection procedures, temporary structures, waste and water management planning, relationship between design and construction methods and the integration of building services into the building structure. Students should have completed introductory studies in Construction to ensure adequate level of entry knowledge.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

 Would have been great if the lectures were able to be held on another time. I do understand that my lecturer has work commitments.

Recommendation:
 Time constraints and a large student body make it difficult to schedule a time suitable to all. Optimised content is anticipated to include recorded online lectures supplimented by tutorials. Casual lecturers are informed of this requirement.

 Wwhat was the point of the 5 Activity assessment? You were only going to give us 5% marks or less anyway.

Recommendation:
 Online assessment forums were introduced to promote student to student and student to teacher engagement and to create a feeling of social and teaching presence. The forums were generally well supported by the students and will continue to be used in distance courses to promote a feeling of community.

  1. Describe in detail construction principles and processes including building components, systems and services for low rise buildings covered by BCA volume 1.
  2. Assess construction documentation for constructability and compliance with codes and standards.
  3. Evaluate the procurement process for a project including objectives, strategies, inspections, temporary works and waste management.
  4. Explain the construction requirements for acoustic insulation and fire safety.
  5. Solve routine and unfamiliar problems using information, technology, logic and ethical decision making.
