Unit Synopsis
The unit will provide you with information and skills to assemble your own UAV and to become acquainted with the parts and function of each. You will review the legal requirements for UAV pilots and aircraft operations and the legal issues associated with flying UAVs. You will explore current and future developments of UAVs including delving into the world of automation. You will cover facets of UAV elements and operations, including an examination of safety procedures and human factors within the UAV system. You will compare the impact of various meteorological conditions on UAV operations including navigation.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
Recommended Student Time Commitment
Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Have a practical component.
I am in the process of developing and applying for the CASA Remote Pilot Operators Certificate that will permit CQU to train, assess and certify Remote Pilots. If the application is not received by the start of Term 2 next year I'll institute a practical assessment assignment where students video either assembly or flight of an RPA .
I completed the ReOC but unfortunately things have ground to a halt with drones at the HE level. I did however develop a practical whereby the students built their own drone from an ensemble of drone parts shipped in from China

The two type of assignments were too similar. There should have been another type of assessment to be introduced.
Have one exam and one assignment to be created.
In the end the students had an assignment of 10 quizzes, another written assignment and the practical. There was no exam.

Audio visuals were very good, but could do with a final edit to clean out technical difficulties.

Time frame and preparation of the RPA kits when it should've been known to approx usual time frame of ordering items from overseas (especially china).
I have put in place a new process of ordering early. Stockpiling was a consideration but an expensive one because of the unknown numbers of students doing the course

The video could have been done more efficiently as during the video, steps were completed that then needed to be undone to do something else.
The video was redone and used last term. It will also be redone again for this term to accommodate slight modifications/new parts that may come from China.
