Assessment Tasks

1 Case Study

Assessment Title
Audiovisual Presentation & PowerPoint

Task Description

Length: 16–18-minute audiovisual presentation and a PowerPoint (15 slides and additional slides for the title page,  case study overview, and  reference list)

Aim: The aim of this assessment is to demonstrate your understanding and application of family processes, models of family work, and practice skills within social group work and family work practice.

Extensions: Available as per policy.  The 72 hour grace period applies to this assessment.

Instructions

You are a social worker in training undertaking a field education placement at a community agency. You will work alongside your supervisor to support a client and their family.  Information about the client and their family will be provided on Moodle in a case study document. You are required to create an audiovisual presentation and a PowerPoint that demonstrate your understanding and application of family work theory, practice skills, and critical reflection to the case scenario.

Please follow the steps below to complete your presentation:

(1)  Start with brief Introduction (1–2 minutes) in which you share how you approached the assessment and selected the theories.

(2)  In your own words, provide a concise overview of the case study and the key presenting issues affecting the client and their family.

(3)  Drawing on the theoretical concepts in this unit, articulate your understanding of how the presenting issues might impact the family’s dynamics.  Explore the family’s boundaries, roles, rules and communication patterns. Critique the applicability of the theoretical concepts in explaining the family’s situation.

(4)  Using contemporary literature, discuss the interpersonal dynamics that may emerge in the intervention process.  Reflect on how you, as a social worker in training, would prepare to respond to these dynamics in an ethical and purposeful way.

(5)  Select one family work model introduced in this unit. Analyse its theoretical tenets and articulate how it would inform your practice approach with the family. Critique the model’s applicability to the specific context and complexities of the case.

(6)  Critically reflect on the sources of knowledge and values informing your understanding of the case study and how you would minimise potential biases in influencing your assessment and intervention. In your discussion, you may consider your emotional responses and cultural positioning.

(7)   Reflect on what this assessment has contributed to your professional development and readiness for future family work practice. Identify one specific skill or insight you will carry forward.

(8)  Record your audiovisual presentation, including a video of yourself speaking alongside the PowerPoint, elaborate on the points made in the PowerPoint slides.

Literature and references

In this assessment use at least 10 contemporary references to support your discussion. You may also use seminal scholarly literature where relevant. Suitable references include peer-reviewed journal articles and textbooks. When sourcing information, consider the 5 elements of a quality reference: currency, authority, relevance, objectivity, and coverage. Grey literature sourced from the internet must be from reputable websites such as from government, university, or peak national bodies: for example, the Australian Association of Social Workers.

Requirements

·       The audiovisual presentation should be 16-18 minutes long. You will need to submit an audio recording of this presentation in the assessment submission portal. You do not need to submit a transcript of this audio presentation.

·       Develop a PowerPoint presentation.  You are not required to include content in the presenter notes section of the PowerPoint.

·       Information within slides should be referenced where appropriate.

·       Include a reference list at the end of your presentation.

·       All references should be documented in accordance with APA 7th edition standards.

·       Ensure the slides are succinct, engaging and demonstrate planning to address the case study and the questions.

·       Check the marking rubric to be sure you are covering all assessment criteria.

Resources

·       You can use unit provided materials and other credible sources (e.g. journal articles, books) to reference your argument. The quality and credibility of your sources are important.

·       We recommend that you access your discipline specific library guide: the Social Work and Community Services Guide.

·       For information on academic communication please go to the Academic Learning Centre Moodle site. The Academic Communication section has many helpful resources including information for students with English as a second language. There are also Oral Presentation resources.

·       For information on using PowerPoint please go to the Academic Learning Centre Computing Basics section – How to use PowerPoint.

Academic Integrity

1.      You must abide by the principles of academic integrity (see Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure). Completion of this assessment with another party or sharing of responses is not permitted at any time.

2.     Level of GenAI use allowed:

Level 2: You may use Al for planning, idea development, and research. Your final submission should show how you have developed and refined these ideas.

Submission

·             If you record your presentation using PowerPoint's built-in audio/video recording tools, you must upload the PowerPoint file (*.pptx) to Moodle.

·             If you use an external program to record your presentation (e.g., Zoom, OBS Studio), you must upload two files:

1.          The video recording of your presentation. To upload your video recording, use the Echo360 tab in the submission area on Moodle.  This method helps prevent issues related to large file sizes and ensures easier access for your marker.

2.          A copy of your PowerPoint presentation (*.pptx) without any embedded audio or video.

Late penalties of 5% per day of the available mark may be applied as per the Assessment Policy and Procedure (Higher Education Coursework).

2 Group Work

Assessment Title
Group Work

Task Description

Type: Part A: Social group work program (a group submission) & Part B: Individual submission: reflection on the use of self and the group process

Weighting: 50% - Part A is worth 30%; Part B is worth 20% - To pass the unit, you must achieve a minimum of 49.5% for this assessment.

Extensions: Available as per policy.  The 72-hour grace period applies to this unit.

Length: Part A 2000 words +/- 10% & Part B: 700 words +/- 10%

Aim: The aim of this assessment is to examine how group work can be utilised as a method of change and what knowledge and skills are required for the purpose of facilitating change.

This assessment has two components: (1) Part A is a social group work program; (2) Part B is a reflection of your own and peer contributions to the groupwork process.

Part A: Instructions

In week 7, you will be allocated to groups of three, to work with two other students.

You are to position yourself as social work students who are completing a field education placement in the same human service organisation.  Your supervisor has asked you to design a short-term, evidence-based group work program (4 sessions) to meet a local community need.

Your submission must include:

(1)  Group Program Overview (approx. 400 words):

·       Brief description of the program and why it is beneficial in the community.

·       Program aims and intended outcomes

·       Inclusion/exclusion criteria for group members for the community group

·       Rationale for using group work (rather than case management, family work, or community development)

·       Key practical considerations (e.g. safety, venue, managing challenges)

(2)  Group Program Session Plan

For each of the four group sessions:

·       Articulate the session’s objectives.

·       Explain the content and activities to be delivered

·       Explain the research and/or theory informing the content

·       Explore the research/theory informing the group process.  This information would consider the anticipated group processes associated with stages of group development and offer facilitation guidance.

·       Identify methods of evaluating client change (session by session and the whole program)

In your submission, include consideration of cultural safety, trauma-informed practice, and accessibility.  It is recommended that you present the four-session group program in A4 landscape.  You may present the group program in the format of a table.  Use brief statements and dot points to elaborate on the points made, keeping with the succinctness requirements for program plans.

Part B: Instructions

You are required to submit an individual reflection focused on your use of self and the group process during your group work on Part A. This reflection must include the following:

·       Discussion of your contribution as a group member: discuss your role and contributions during the group project, reflect on your strengths, challenges and areas for growth.

·       Exploration of group dynamics: Drawing on group work theoretical concepts covered in this unit, reflect on how your group worked together, made decisions, fulfilled group roles and managed the termination phase.  Consider any changes in your group’s dynamics over time and how differing opinions or conflict were managed.

·       Examples from your group work: Use specific examples to support your reflection.

·       Group work literature: Incorporate relevant literature to support your discussion.

Learning Outcomes Assessed

Academic Integrity Statement

As a CQUniversity student you are expected to act honestly in all aspects of your academic work.

Any assessable work undertaken or submitted for review or assessment must be your own work. Assessable work is any type of work you do to meet the assessment requirements in the unit, including draft work submitted for review and feedback and final work to be assessed.

When you use the ideas, words or data of others in your assessment, you must thoroughly and clearly acknowledge the source of this information by using the correct referencing style for your unit. Using others’ work without proper acknowledgement may be considered a form of intellectual dishonesty.

Participating honestly, respectfully, responsibly, and fairly in your university study ensures the CQUniversity qualification you earn will be valued as a true indication of your individual academic achievement and will continue to receive the respect and recognition it deserves.

As a student, you are responsible for reading and following CQUniversity’s policies, including the Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure. This policy sets out CQUniversity’s expectations of you to act with integrity, examples of academic integrity breaches to avoid, the processes used to address alleged breaches of academic integrity, and potential penalties.

What is a breach of academic integrity?

A breach of academic integrity includes but is not limited to plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, cheating, contract cheating, and academic misconduct. The Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure defines what these terms mean and gives examples.

Why is academic integrity important?

A breach of academic integrity may result in one or more penalties, including suspension or even expulsion from the University. It can also have negative implications for student visas and future enrolment at CQUniversity or elsewhere. Students who engage in contract cheating also risk being blackmailed by contract cheating services.

Where can I get assistance?

For academic advice and guidance, the Academic Learning Centre (ALC) can support you in becoming confident in completing assessments with integrity and of high standard.
