Overview
This interdisciplinary unit integrates principles from chemistry, biology, pharmacology, and environmental science to enhance your understanding of chemistry concepts. Within this unit, you will explore organic compounds derived from living organisms, including plants, fungi, bacteria, and marine life, uncovering their diverse biological uses and applications. You will develop proficiency in advanced laboratory compliance procedures and practice skills for identifying, analyzing, and applying effective inquiry-based learning strategies in a laboratory setting. The core theoretical concepts encompass bioassay-guided isolation and characterization, biosynthesis of complex molecules, the influence of drug discovery on research direction, ecological roles within ecosystems (e.g., plant-herbivore interactions, pollination, defense mechanisms, and chemical signaling), indigenous traditional use that highlights ethnobotanical knowledge, and the commercial-economic significance spanning industries like pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and agriculture. This unit will equip you with essential attributes for further research studies or a career in chemical sciences-related fields. Pre-requisites or Co-requisites
Completion of 72 credit points.
Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
