Overview
The discipline of psychology has a long history of using research and theory to provide explanations for the complexities of human behaviour. Yet, we live in a world that is rapidly changing – environmentally, socially, politically, and technologically. In this unit, you will learn how psychology is responding to contemporary challenges, particularly when it comes to diverse and vulnerable groups in our society. You will be exposed to critical and emerging issues in the study of psychology. Drawing on a scientist-practitioner approach, you will examine how psychological theory and research can be applied to the identification and evaluation of solutions to these challenges.

Pre-requisites or Co-requisites
Students must be enrolled in CC42 Bachelor of Psychological Science (Honours)
Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
Recommended Student Time Commitment
Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Grading
This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of 'pass' in order to pass the unit. If any 'pass/fail' tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully ('pass' grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the 'assessment task' section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Consult the University's Grades and Results Policy for more details of interim results and final grades.

Learning outcomes fulfil the level 2 pre-professional core competencies required by the updated Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) guidelines. The learning outcomes also meet the study criteria as specified by the Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA) and as appropriate for study at level 8 as stated by the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF).

1 Written Assessment
The discipline of psychology has a long history of using research and theory to provide explanations for the complexities of human behaviour. Yet, we live in a world that is rapidly changing – environmentally, socially, politically, and technologically. This assessment will allow you to apply your knowledge of how psychology is responding to contemporary challenges, particularly when it comes to diverse and vulnerable groups in our society. Drawing on a scientist-practitioner approach, you will demonstrate how psychological theory and research can be applied to the identification and evaluation of solutions to these challenges.
A call for applications for funding has been put out by philanthropic group, The Community Benefit Foundation. The Foundation is offering a grant of $50,000 for a community organisation to create and implement an intervention that will address an issue related to a contemporary challenge experienced by a group in our society. The issue and intervention must be informed by the academic evidence base.
A grant application template has been provided (plus an annotated template with guiding comments). You are to complete this grant application as an employee of a grassroots community organisation. You will need to ‘make up’ this organisation and its mission/purpose. E.g., Thorne Thought is a not-for-profit dedicated to improving the mental health and wellbeing of young people in South Australia. You are free to choose the contemporary challenge (and potentially a diverse/vulnerable group) that you address. It is a good idea to peruse the topics that we are covering in this unit and consider using one of these or the resources provided. Your grassroots organisation will have one year to complete this project so please ensure your timeline is appropriate.
Assessment word count: Each section has a maximum word or page limit (specified on the grant application template). There is no minimum word count.

2 Presentation

Yet, we live in a world that is rapidly changing – environmentally, socially, politically, and technologically. This assessment will allow you to apply your knowledge of how psychology is responding to contemporary challenges, particularly when it comes to diverse and vulnerable groups in our society. Drawing on a scientist-practitioner approach, you will demonstrate how psychological theory and research can be applied to the identification and evaluation of solutions to these challenges.
This assessment will take the form of an oral presentation to a panel of potential funders. In this task, you will assume the role of a psychology-trained advisor supporting an existing First Nations–led initiative or program. Rather than designing a new intervention, you will critically engage with an initiative that is already being led by First Nations communities or organisations and develop a persuasive case for funding support.
The presentation will be 10 minutes duration (+/- 10%), with approximately 5 minutes of questions afterwards.
Overall Weighting: 50%
This will take the form of an oral presentation to a panel of potential funders. In this task, you will assume the role of a psychology-trained advisor supporting an existing First Nations–led initiative or program. Immediately after your presentation (within 1 hour), you must submit the following to Moodle:
- Your PowerPoint (or equivalent) slides
- A brief written summary of the issue and funding case (250 words +/- 10%)
- A one-page proposed budget
- A reference list
- A statement as to how you have used GenAI
PLEASE NOTE: This must be a different funding pitch and topic to the one you addressed for Assessment 1 (Grant Application).
