Overview
This unit introduces the foundational knowledge and skills required for occupational therapy practice. You will explore the theoretical frameworks and contemporary practice models that inform the profession, as well as the regulatory and professional standards that support ethical practice. Through engagement with a range of meaningful occupations, you will learn to conduct occupational therapy activity analyses as a core professional skill. The unit also introduces occupational therapy assessment and intervention processes across diverse functional presentations, age groups, and practice contexts.

Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses
Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.
Feedback from SUTE comments
Some students found the Assessment #1 task challenging to understand.
It is recommended that this assessment task be reviewed, and if retained ensure all instructions are sufficiently clear.
Feedback from SUTE comments, informal feedback to educators
Practical content was appreciated, with more requested.
It is recommended that increased practical content be introduced to workshops in order to support concepts learned in lectures.
Feedback from SUTE comments, Educator reflection, External assessment by course reviewers
Some students are challenged to understand and visualise the application of class content to clinical practice.
It is recommended that the order of content in the two Year 1 OCCT units be reviewed and rearranged as needed so that students can be engaged in practical, clinically relevant activities across the whole year.
Feedback from SUTE comments, Educator reflection, internal curriculum review
While a highly valued component of the unit, interviewing may be better placed in Term 2.
It is recommended that communication and interviewing content be moved to Term 2, with activity analysis moved from Term 2 to Term 1.
Feedback from SUTE comments, Unit Coordinator observations and reflection.
Students at this level find it difficult to engage in content at the remote campus without an onsite educator.
It is recommended that staffing allocations be considered to provide more coverage on the far campus.
