Overview
In this unit, you will have the opportunity to practice fundamental nursing care in the clinical environment. You will apply the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) registered nurse standards for practice (2016). You will continue to explore the importance of the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards (2017) to all nursing practice in Australia and use the Patient Safety Competency Framework (PSCF) (Levett-Jones et al., 2017) in your practice as a nursing student. You will be expected to identify risk and recognise and respond appropriately to the older adult who is a deteriorating patient in the simulated and clinical environment. You will review the concept of scope of practice using the Decision-making framework (DMF) (NMBA, 2020). You are required to participate in a compulsory four (4) day residential school prior to attending professional experience placement for this unit. This unit includes a 240-hour block professional experience placement in a clinical environment. This must be undertaken in a fulltime capacity. You must meet specific mandatory health, safety and security requirements to be eligible to attend each professional experience placement. Professional experience placements may be limited in your community, and you may be placed in other locations. Please be prepared financially and personally to cover the costs to relocate for placements. Due to the limited availability of placements, some block placements have start and/or end dates that fall outside standard term dates. You must be physically and mentally well and meet the inherent requirements of the course to undertake this unit in the simulated and clinical environment. To be successful in this unit you must pass both assessment items.

NURS29004 includes a mandatory four-day Residential School commencing 16 December 2025, designed to consolidate clinical reasoning, skills, and professional judgement through immersive, scenario-based learning. The Clinical Scenarios will be examined online in the weeks preceding Residential School so that on-campus time in the Simulation Laboratory can focus on advanced application and feedback. As this unit is offered online with a Residential School component, you are expected to prepare an individual study plan and undertake self-led, self-directed learning throughout the term. Keep in regular contact with your Unit Coordinator(s) to clarify expectations and discuss progress. Please check Moodle Announcements and Discussion forums at least twice a week for assessment timelines, unit resources, and essential updates, and monitor your CQUniversity email at least twice a week so you don’t miss critical communications. Before Residential School, complete the required readings, modules, and online scenarios, and use your results to identify strengths and gaps; bring any required attire and documentation to Residential School.
1 Online Test
This assessment is an invigilated, online quiz conducted on Day 1 of the NURS29004 Residential School. It is a mandatory pass/fail assessment that evaluates your ability to perform mathematical and medication calculations and demonstrate understanding of safe supply and administration of both parenteral and non-parenteral medications. The quiz contains 20 questions randomly selected from a question bank, to be completed within 60 minutes in a single sitting. You may have up to three (3) attempts to achieve 100%, which is required to pass. Students who do not reach 100% after three attempts may not progress to professional experience placement.
You will complete the assessment through Moodle under invigilation conditions at Residential School. Please ensure your CQUniversity login and password are active and that you bring your own device (laptop preferred). Tablets or mobile devices are not recommended due to limited compatibility. If you are unable to bring a device, contact the Unit Coordinator before Residential School. The quiz must be completed without logging out, refreshing, or reloading the browser, as this will automatically submit your attempt. Results will be released immediately upon submission.
Before Residential School, you are expected to complete preparatory activities and review the mathematical and medication safety resources via links available on the NURS29004 Moodle site. You may use approved medication formulas, a basic calculator, pen/pencil, and blank paper during the quiz. The use of mobile phones, smart devices with internet access, or calculator applications is not permitted.
If you experience technical difficulties, immediately notify the supervising staff or Unit Coordinator. Support may be provided onsite or through the Technology and Services Assistance Centre (TASAC) on 1300 666 620.
All students must adhere to CQUniversity’s Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure. Collaboration, sharing responses, or using generative artificial intelligence tools during this assessment is prohibited (Level 1: No AI).
To meet the minimum pass criteria, you must:
Achieve 100% in this assessment.
Pass this assessment to progress to your professional experience placement.
Achieve a pass in both assessments within this unit to pass NURS29004 overall.
In line with university policy, no extensions or grace periods apply. Re-attempts are available only within the residential school period, typically on Day 2 or Day 3 if required. Supplementary assessment is not available for Work Integrated Learning units.
Further information, including access to preparatory resources, will be available on the NURS29004 Moodle site.
Week 6 Tuesday (16 Dec 2025) 10:00 am AEST
Week 6 Tuesday (16 Dec 2025)
Quiz results will be available immediately after the attempt is completed.
The assessment criteria for Assessment 1: Invigilated Maths and Medication Calculation Quiz in NURS29004 Practice Experience 1 focus on demonstrating safe, accurate, and competent calculation and administration of medications in alignment with professional nursing standards. Students must achieve 100% accuracy to pass this assessment, reflecting the non-negotiable expectation of precision for clinical practice. The assessment measures each student’s ability to apply mathematical principles to medication calculations and dosage conversions, demonstrating sound reasoning and attention to detail. It is required that each question be answered correctly for a pass to be awarded. The quiz includes 20 questions, each allocated one mark, and is designed to test understanding of core numeracy skills related to medication administration, including conversions between units, calculating dose volumes, infusion rates, and interpreting prescriptions safely. Students will also be assessed on their understanding of safe medication supply, checking processes, and principles underpinning parenteral and non-parenteral administration.
Performance will be evaluated according to the following expectations: calculations must be accurate; appropriate formulas must be applied consistently; and results must demonstrate understanding of both numerical reasoning and safe medication practice. A pass indicates that the student has demonstrated full competency and readiness to progress to professional placement. Students who do not achieve 100% on the first attempt will be provided with coaching and up to two additional re-attempts during Residential School to achieve this benchmark. Failure to meet the required standard after three attempts will result in a fail grade for the assessment and may prevent progression to professional experience placement.
The assessment also evaluates adherence to academic integrity standards and professional conduct. Students must complete the quiz independently, without collaboration, use of generative artificial intelligence, or access to unapproved electronic devices. The use of calculators, written workings, or approved formula sheets is permitted, but any device with internet access (e.g., smartphones or smart watches) is prohibited. Students are also assessed on their ability to comply with assessment conditions, remaining logged in, submitting their work within the 60-minute timeframe, and following invigilator instructions.
To pass the unit overall, students must achieve a pass grade in both Assessment 1 and the subsequent assessment task. In accordance with CQUniversity assessment policy, no extensions, grace periods, or supplementary assessments apply to this invigilated test. Results will be available immediately after submission, and all grades remain provisional until confirmed through moderation and assessment committee processes. Further details on preparation materials and the coaching process for re-attempts are provided in Moodle.
- Demonstrate knowledge and application of safe supply and administration of parenteral and non-parenteral medication.
2 Professional Practice Placement
This task assesses your ability to demonstrate safe, person-centred, and evidence-informed nursing practice during a 240-hour Professional Experience Placement. It requires integration of the NMBA Registered Nurse Standards for Practice (2016), NSQHS Standards (2017), and the Patient Safety Competency Framework (2017) across physical and psychosocial assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care. The assessment focuses on applying fundamental nursing care, identifying and managing risk, recognising and responding to deterioration, and demonstrating professional judgement within your scope of practice using the NMBA Decision-Making Framework (2020).
Attendance for the full 240 hours of placement is mandatory. The assessment is graded Pass/Fail, and extensions or grace periods are not permitted under University policy. Satisfactory performance across all Australian Nursing Standards Assessment Tool (ANSAT) criteria is required, with a minimum score of 3 (Satisfactory) in each domain of the Summative ANSAT to achieve a pass for this unit.
You will complete two formal assessments using the ANSAT via the SONIA system:
Formative Assessment (mid-placement) – after approximately 80–120 hours.
Complete and submit your student self-assessment in SONIA.
Discuss feedback with your assessor and the Unit Coordinator.
If any criterion scores below 3, a Learning Support Plan may be implemented.
Summative Assessment (end of placement) – on your final placement day.
Complete your self-assessment and submit to your assessor.
Participate in the feedback discussion and complete the Student Declaration in SONIA.
The Unit Coordinator reviews your ANSAT and verifies your total placement hours before assigning a final grade.
In addition, you must maintain a Record of Attendance, signed each shift by your supervising RN, preceptor, or facilitator. The verified record must be uploaded to Moodle within three (3) days of completing placement. Your final grade will not be released until this record is received.
Professional conduct is expected throughout placement. Any unsafe, unethical, or unprofessional behaviour that breaches the NMBA Standards, Code of Conduct, Code of Ethics, or Social Media Policy may result in removal from placement and a fail grade. Compliance with CQUniversity’s WIL Placement Policy, Student Conduct Policy, and uniform requirements is compulsory.
This is a non-AI assessment (Level 1): all work must reflect your own understanding and authentic engagement. Collaboration, shared writing, or use of generative tools is not permitted.
Further guidance and sample ANSAT forms are provided on the WIL Moodle site, including access to relevant policies and templates to support successful completion.
Final day of placement
This assessment is based on your performance and professional conduct during the 240-hour Professional Experience Placement, evaluated through the Australian Nursing Standards Assessment Tool (ANSAT). The ANSAT provides a structured framework to assess your development against the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Registered Nurse Standards for Practice (2016). To achieve a Pass, you must demonstrate safe and competent practice in each criterion and achieve a minimum score of 3 (Satisfactory) for all domains on the Summative ANSAT.
Assessment involves two distinct evaluation points:
Formative: ANSAT (Mid-Placement): Conducted after approximately 80–120 hours to provide developmental feedback and guide learning. Scores and feedback inform progress and may trigger a Learning Support Plan if performance is below a satisfactory level.
Summative: ANSAT (End of Placement): Completed on the final day of placement. This assessment determines whether you have achieved satisfactory competency across all ANSAT criteria and met the professional standards required.
Your performance will be verified by your preceptor or clinical facilitator and reviewed by the Unit Coordinator, who will confirm satisfactory completion of all required hours and documentation. Failure to achieve a minimum score of 3 in any criterion, or failure to complete the required placement hours, will result in a Fail grade for the assessment.
Professionalism, attendance, adherence to policy, and demonstration of culturally safe, ethical, and accountable practice underpin all aspects of this assessment.
Further details and exemplars of ANSAT criteria are available on the WIL Moodle site for reference and preparation.
- Apply the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Registered nurse standards for practice in the physical and psychosocial assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of consumers, including those with cognitive impairment in the simulated and clinical environment.
- Identify potential risks for the consumer, especially the elderly in clinical environments and determine strategies to minimise these risks.
- Recognise and respond appropriately to the deteriorating patient in the simulated and clinical environment.
- Develop strategies for self-care when managing decline in cognition in the older person with delirium and/or dementia.
- Demonstrate knowledge and application of safe supply and administration of parenteral and non-parenteral medication.
As a CQUniversity student you are expected to act honestly in all aspects of your academic work.
Any assessable work undertaken or submitted for review or assessment must be your own work. Assessable work is any type of work you do to meet the assessment requirements in the unit, including draft work submitted for review and feedback and final work to be assessed.
When you use the ideas, words or data of others in your assessment, you must thoroughly and clearly acknowledge the source of this information by using the correct referencing style for your unit. Using others’ work without proper acknowledgement may be considered a form of intellectual dishonesty.
Participating honestly, respectfully, responsibly, and fairly in your university study ensures the CQUniversity qualification you earn will be valued as a true indication of your individual academic achievement and will continue to receive the respect and recognition it deserves.
As a student, you are responsible for reading and following CQUniversity’s policies, including the Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure. This policy sets out CQUniversity’s expectations of you to act with integrity, examples of academic integrity breaches to avoid, the processes used to address alleged breaches of academic integrity, and potential penalties.
What is a breach of academic integrity?
A breach of academic integrity includes but is not limited to plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, cheating, contract cheating, and academic misconduct. The Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure defines what these terms mean and gives examples.
Why is academic integrity important?
A breach of academic integrity may result in one or more penalties, including suspension or even expulsion from the University. It can also have negative implications for student visas and future enrolment at CQUniversity or elsewhere. Students who engage in contract cheating also risk being blackmailed by contract cheating services.
Where can I get assistance?
For academic advice and guidance, the Academic Learning Centre (ALC) can support you in becoming confident in completing assessments with integrity and of high standard.
