General Information

Overview

The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Registered Nurse Standards for Practice (2016) expect that a registered nurse is able to think critically and analyse nursing practice. This is achieved by accessing, analysing, and using the best available evidence, that includes research findings for safe quality practice. In this unit, you will be introduced to an evidence-based approach to clinical inquiry and decision making that underpins nursing practice. You will develop skills in locating evidence, evaluating and applying research findings to inform best practice.

Assessment Tasks

1 Annotated bibliography

Assessment Title
Annotated Bibligraphy

Task Description

Type: Annotated Bibliography
Due date: 4 pm (AEST) Thursday 14 August 2025 (Week 5)
Extensions: Available as per policy
The 72-hour grace period applies to this assessment
Return date: Results for this assessment will be made available on Thursday 4 September 2025
Weighting: 40%
Length: 2,500 words +/- 10% (excluding reference list)
Unit Coordinator: Dr Jen Mulvogue

Learning Outcomes Assessed
Adapt a systematic approach to evidence identification and selection to address a specific clinical topic.
Appraise evidence and use critical thinking skills when applying evidence in clinical contexts.
Advocate for the purpose of evidence in nursing practice and persuade why clinical decision making should be based on the best available evidence.

Aim
The aim of this assessment is for you to demonstrate the skills to formulate an answerable clinical/research question and search for evidence using a systematic approach to answer the question. You will demonstrate how you critically summarise the annotations and appraised your search findings. Your clinical question is based on one of the scenarios below. The information required to undertake this assessment is covered in Weeks 1 to 5.

Instructions
You are required to prepare an annotated bibliography to complete this assessment.
Please follow the steps below to complete this assessment task:

Task 1. Choose one (1) scenario presented in Appendix 1.
Select ONE (1) contemporary healthcare issue from the scenario you chose from Appendix 1.

Use the NURS28006 Assessment 1 template to present this assessment. The template is available on the unit Moodle site.

Formulate your answerable clinical/research question from your chosen scenario using your selected framework and structured search strategy.
Use a framework to help you develop a clinical question (such as PICO, PICOs or SPIDER). For example – Does a vegetarian diet (I) in people over the age of 50 (P) improve heart disease (O) compared to a meat inclusive diet (C)?
Develop one (1) specific clinical question. The question must contain a segment of one of either scenario 1 or scenario 2.
Create a search string including at least four (4) Boolean operators and other filters, or limiters.
Identify your inclusion and exclusion criteria.

Task 2: Level of evidence appraisal.
Search two CQUniversity databases and select six (6) relevant articles. Provide references, in American Psychological Association (APA) 7th edition referencing style, for six (6) current credible peer-reviewed journal articles that you intend to use to answer your clinical/research question. Important: The resources must be current, i.e., 2018 to the present. Do not use clinical practice guidelines, editorials, opinion pieces, JBI (Johanna Briggs Institute) resources, hospital policies or web pages for this assessment.

Task 3: Under each reference, identify the level of evidence in the article using the Pyramid of Evidence.

Task 4: Annotated Bibliography. Create six annotations. For each annotation use the ACROC (authority, currency, relevance, objective, coverage) to critically summarise the level of evidence of each annotation. Each annotation should have the words authority, currency, relevance, objective, coverage noted within the summary and to what degree the annotation contributes to answering your clinical question.

Task 5: After you have detailed the six (6) annotations and completed the critical summary of each, include an analysis of your findings and include additional academic literature to critically analyse whether you were able to answer your clinical question and recommendations you may make to advocate an evidence-based rationale for patient care.

Academic Integrity
You must abide by the principles of academic integrity (see Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure). Completion of this assessment with another party or sharing of responses is not permitted at any time.
The use of any generative artificial intelligence is permitted as per Level 2 (AI planning) and Level 3 (AI Collaboration) AI Assessment scale tool indicators:

Appendix 1 – Case Scenarios

Scenario 1: Nursing intervention to manage pain associated with shingles
You are a registered nurse working in a community health centre. Part of your role is to visit community living patients who live independently with additional support from the community health centre. One of the people you visit is 78-year-old Mrs Briggs. Mrs Briggs is usually a healthy and active person, however when you visit her today, she lets you know she is in quite a bit of pain and is hot and itchy. She had an appointment with her doctor and was diagnosed with shingles. Mrs Briggs has had some bad reactions to medications in the past and is worried taking medication may cause side effects that may be worse than the pain she is currently experiencing. She stated the doctor had said there were some good ways to manage the symptoms of shingles through diet and cool compresses (for example). Your task is to appraise the academic literature to provide evidence-informed recommendations for Mrs Brigg’s care planning and to provide Mrs Briggs with education about shingles and symptom management.

Scenario 2: Exercise and mental health
You were recently at a nursing conference and one of the speakers discussed the importance of exercise and mental health. You have been working with some young people who have mental health challenges, and you wonder if this may be something that could be discussed with some of the participants or as an education session for the staff. You would like to know more about this and decide to appraise academic literature. Your task is to find credible evidence-based information on the effects of exercise on mental health.

Learning Outcomes Assessed

1.      Adapt a systematic approach to evidence identification and selection to address a specific clinical topic

2.      Appraise evidence and use critical thinking skills when applying evidence in clinical contexts.

3.      Advocate for the purpose of evidence in nursing practice and persuade why clinical decision making should be based on the best available evidence.

Aim

The aim of this assessment is for you to demonstrate the skills to adapt a systematic approach to answer a clinical/research question and to address a specific clinical topic. You will use the same clinical/research question you used in the first assessment, however you will build on the evidence you have gained from the annotated bibliography. You will further analyse evidence and explore this topic by using a variety of sources to further examine and to comprehensively address this topic. You will need to use critical thinking skills in your appraisal of evidence and draw on assessment tools to ensure the sources you use have authority, have currency, relevance, coverage and are objective. You will also analyse the credibility of the sources you have used in this case study to gain a thorough awareness of the topic, advocating evidence based recommendations from the information you have analysed. Finally, you will apply a reflective approach to explore your process of examining the sources of evidence and applying them to a health topic, including the importance of evidence based practice and the crucial way it supports high standards of nursing practice.

Instructions

Please follow the steps below to complete your assessment task:

Task 1: Case Study

1.      Re-state your answerable clinical/research question you selected when you completed assessment one.

Task 2: Introduction

2.      Write an introduction to this case study, outlining what the reader can expect to find in the case study.

Task 3: Gathering and applying evidence

3.      Search for further evidence to answer your clinical/research question. Locate several sources including, but not limited clinical practice guidelines, news articles and other grey literature, social media, national nursing standards, national policy documents and websites to further explore and answer your clinical/research question. Use headings to signpost the various sources you have used, for example News Articles. You may also draw on the literature you have already sourced from your annotated bibliography and additional academic literature.

4.      Ensue all sources are assessed for currency, relevance, authority, coverage and objectivity and that the sites are credible.

5.      Provide an analysis of all the evidence you have found to answer your clinical question. Justify the sources you have used in your case study and how you have assessed them for authenticity and relevance.

6.      Make recommendations to support your findings.

Task 4: Reflection

7.      Consider your journey through this unit. Reflect how you would advocate for the use of evidence based sources in your clinical decision making and how this may influence patient health outcomes.

Academic Integrity Statement

As a CQUniversity student you are expected to act honestly in all aspects of your academic work.

Any assessable work undertaken or submitted for review or assessment must be your own work. Assessable work is any type of work you do to meet the assessment requirements in the unit, including draft work submitted for review and feedback and final work to be assessed.

When you use the ideas, words or data of others in your assessment, you must thoroughly and clearly acknowledge the source of this information by using the correct referencing style for your unit. Using others’ work without proper acknowledgement may be considered a form of intellectual dishonesty.

Participating honestly, respectfully, responsibly, and fairly in your university study ensures the CQUniversity qualification you earn will be valued as a true indication of your individual academic achievement and will continue to receive the respect and recognition it deserves.

As a student, you are responsible for reading and following CQUniversity’s policies, including the Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure. This policy sets out CQUniversity’s expectations of you to act with integrity, examples of academic integrity breaches to avoid, the processes used to address alleged breaches of academic integrity, and potential penalties.

What is a breach of academic integrity?

A breach of academic integrity includes but is not limited to plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, cheating, contract cheating, and academic misconduct. The Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure defines what these terms mean and gives examples.

Why is academic integrity important?

A breach of academic integrity may result in one or more penalties, including suspension or even expulsion from the University. It can also have negative implications for student visas and future enrolment at CQUniversity or elsewhere. Students who engage in contract cheating also risk being blackmailed by contract cheating services.

Where can I get assistance?

For academic advice and guidance, the Academic Learning Centre (ALC) can support you in becoming confident in completing assessments with integrity and of high standard.
