Learning Outcomes Assessed

Learning Outcome 1: Design a research proposal to answer a research question related to your professional practice

Aim

The aim of this assessment is to provide you with an opportunity to design a research proposal.

Instructions

Please follow the steps below to complete your assessment task:

Use the following headings, guidelines and suggested word allocations to structure and complete your proposal.

1.    Abstract (No more than 250 words)

The abstract should provide the reader with an outline that summarises the entire proposal. Include these headings: Background and Context; Problem; Aim; Methodology and Method; Significance for Professional Practice.

2.    Introduction (approximately 500 words)

The introduction should provide the reader with an understanding of what you are intending to investigate in your research project. You should include the following:

·      Background to your project

·      Context of your project

·      The purpose of the project and why the problem needs to be investigated

·      The importance or significance of what you are proposing to do.

4.    Literature Review (approximately 700 words)

The literature review should demonstrate your knowledge of the research topic. It should provide a rationale for why your topic is important. It should include the most current evidence about the topic (but you don’t need to solely provide the most recent evidence). At the end of the review you need to state how the proposed research will contribute to this existing body of knowledge.

5.    Research question/s aim and objectives (approximately 250 words)

Your research question/s aim and objectives need to align with your problem, background, context and literature review.

Your research question/s generate the aims and objectives. The aim should state the purpose or the intent of the project, that is what you hope to achieve with the study. The objectives identify the project outcomes necessary to achieve the aim. The objectives are specific, clearly defined and measurable.

6.    Research design/methodology/methods (approximately 750 words)

In this section you should outline and discuss your research approach and the overall methodology you have selected to answer your research question. Discuss the methods you will use to collect and analyse the data. Justify your research approach, data collection and analysis methods – that is why they are the most appropriate to address your research question.

7.    Ethical considerations (approximately 750 words)

Examine and justify how ethical principles relate to the design and implementation of your research project. Identify and examine any potential ethical dilemmas in your project and formulate and justify how you will manage these dilemmas. Include reference to the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research (2023) in your discussion. Ensure you include discussion of the following:

·      Recognising and minimising harm, discomfort and inconvenience for participants, the organisation, and investigators.

·      Recruitment of participants

·      Informed consent

·      Privacy and confidentiality

·      Data collection, use and management.

8.    Limitations (approximately 250 words)

Identify and examine actual and potential limitations of your project and how you plan to prevent or limit these. Limitations are the influences on the project that you cannot control.

9.    Conclusion (approximately 400 words)

Summarise the key points made and include a concluding statement of the main ideas identified in the proposal.

10. References

11. Appendices

In your appendices please attach material such as proposed survey questions, interview schedule or any other research tools that you may be using for your project.

Literature and references

In this assessment use at least 20 references to support your discussion. You may also use seminal scholarly literature where relevant. Suitable references include peer-reviewed journal articles as well as textbooks and credible websites. Grey literature sourced from the internet must be from reputable websites such as from government, university, or peak national bodies: for example, the Australian College of Nursing, the Australian Association of Social Workers, Australian Bureau of Statistics, Australian Institute of Health and Welfare. Note, that websites such as StatPearls, Life in the Fastlane, and Wikipedia are not suitable for this assessment task. Academic Integrity Statement

As a CQUniversity student you are expected to act honestly in all aspects of your academic work.

Any assessable work undertaken or submitted for review or assessment must be your own work. Assessable work is any type of work you do to meet the assessment requirements in the unit, including draft work submitted for review and feedback and final work to be assessed.

When you use the ideas, words or data of others in your assessment, you must thoroughly and clearly acknowledge the source of this information by using the correct referencing style for your unit. Using others’ work without proper acknowledgement may be considered a form of intellectual dishonesty.

Participating honestly, respectfully, responsibly, and fairly in your university study ensures the CQUniversity qualification you earn will be valued as a true indication of your individual academic achievement and will continue to receive the respect and recognition it deserves.

As a student, you are responsible for reading and following CQUniversity’s policies, including the Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure. This policy sets out CQUniversity’s expectations of you to act with integrity, examples of academic integrity breaches to avoid, the processes used to address alleged breaches of academic integrity, and potential penalties.

What is a breach of academic integrity?

A breach of academic integrity includes but is not limited to plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, cheating, contract cheating, and academic misconduct. The Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure defines what these terms mean and gives examples.

Why is academic integrity important?

A breach of academic integrity may result in one or more penalties, including suspension or even expulsion from the University. It can also have negative implications for student visas and future enrolment at CQUniversity or elsewhere. Students who engage in contract cheating also risk being blackmailed by contract cheating services.

Where can I get assistance?

For academic advice and guidance, the Academic Learning Centre (ALC) can support you in becoming confident in completing assessments with integrity and of high standard.
