Overview
This unit introduces you to the foundations of research skills and knowledge required for nursing, midwifery and social sciences research. You will critically appraise and justify research paradigms and develop and justify research questions for qualitative, quantitative or mixed method designs, and propose suitable research paradigms and designs to answer your research question.

Offerings For Term 1 - 2025
Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
Recommended Student Time Commitment
Each 6-credit Postgraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Overview
Assessment Grading
This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of 'pass' in order to pass the unit. If any 'pass/fail' tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully ('pass' grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the 'assessment task' section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%). Consult the University's Grades and Results Policy for more details of interim results and final grades.

1 Written Assessment
Unit Code: NURS20168
Unit Title: Designing Research in Nursing, Midwifery and Social Sciences
Assessment 1
Type: Written Assignment
Due date: Wednesday April 9, 2025 4pm AEST
Extensions: Available as per policy
Return date: Results for this assessment will be made available on Wednesday April 23, 2025 4pm (AEST).
Weighting: 40%
Length: 2500-3000 words +/- 10% (excluding reference list)
Unit Coordinator: Associate Professor Julie Bradshaw
Learning Outcomes Assessed
1. Critically appraise and justify research paradigms and methods used to answer research questions in contemporary, diverse healthcare settings.
2. Construct and justify research question/s appropriate to qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods research design.
Aim
The aim of this assessment is for you to demonstrate your understanding of research paradigms and your ability to construct a research question and explain its alignment with a research paradigm and research approach.
Instructions
Please follow the steps below to complete your assessment task:
For Part 1 – write as an academic essay.
1. Provide an introduction that introduces paradigms and their relationship to research (approximately 100 words).
2. Define qualitative and quantitative research paradigms (approximately 200 words).
3. Analyse the fundamental differences between qualitative and quantitative research paradigms (approximately 750 words).
4. Provide a conclusion summarising the main points from your essay and construct a concluding statement (approximately 100 words).
5. Provide a reference list.
For Part 2 – write as three sections. Each section should be 400- 500 words. An introduction and conclusion are not required.
For each section:
1. Write a research question. (You will write three research questions – one related to qualitative research, one related to quantitative research, and one related to mixed methods.)
2. Explain what paradigm your research question is aligned to and why.
3. Briefly propose a method that would answer your research question.
4. Provide a reference list.
Literature and references
In this assessment use at least 8 references to support your discussion. As you will be drawing on references related to research methodology, there is no need for the references to be contemporary. Suitable references include peer-reviewed journal articles as well as textbooks and credible websites. When sourcing information, consider the 5 elements of a quality reference: currency, authority, relevance, objectivity, and coverage. Grey literature sourced from the internet must be from reputable websites such as from government, university, or peak national bodies: for example, the Australian College of Nursing, the Australian Association of Social Workers, Australian Bureau of Statistics, Australian Institute of Health and Welfare. Note, that websites such as StatPearls, Life in the Fastlane, and Wikipedia are not suitable for this assessment task. Lecture notes are not primary sources of evidence and should not be used in this assessment. All resources, other than web pages and grey literature, must be sources from the CQUniversity library.

Choose a methodology that would answer the research question.
Step 4:
Research that methodology – you will be proposing how you will choose your sample/participants, how you will collect your data and how you will analyse it.
Step 5:
Write your assessment using the following structure and headings. It is not absolutely essential that you follow this suggested structure.
Introduction
Write an introduction that includes your research question, a brief overview of the methodology you have chosen and the reason why it was chosen.
Paragraph 1 and 2
Explain the paradigm and research approach that aligns with your research question and your chosen methodology.

As a CQUniversity student you are expected to act honestly in all aspects of your academic work.
Any assessable work undertaken or submitted for review or assessment must be your own work. Assessable work is any type of work you do to meet the assessment requirements in the unit, including draft work submitted for review and feedback and final work to be assessed.
When you use the ideas, words or data of others in your assessment, you must thoroughly and clearly acknowledge the source of this information by using the correct referencing style for your unit. Using others’ work without proper acknowledgement may be considered a form of intellectual dishonesty.
Participating honestly, respectfully, responsibly, and fairly in your university study ensures the CQUniversity qualification you earn will be valued as a true indication of your individual academic achievement and will continue to receive the respect and recognition it deserves.
As a student, you are responsible for reading and following CQUniversity’s policies, including the Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure. This policy sets out CQUniversity’s expectations of you to act with integrity, examples of academic integrity breaches to avoid, the processes used to address alleged breaches of academic integrity, and potential penalties.
What is a breach of academic integrity?
A breach of academic integrity includes but is not limited to plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, cheating, contract cheating, and academic misconduct. The Student Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure defines what these terms mean and gives examples.
Why is academic integrity important?
A breach of academic integrity may result in one or more penalties, including suspension or even expulsion from the University. It can also have negative implications for student visas and future enrolment at CQUniversity or elsewhere. Students who engage in contract cheating also risk being blackmailed by contract cheating services.
Where can I get assistance?
For academic advice and guidance, the Academic Learning Centre (ALC) can support you in becoming confident in completing assessments with integrity and of high standard.
