Overview
Mental health nursing is a specialised area of nursing that focuses on the care of people with mental health challenges. Nurses who work within the mental health care framework operate from a strengths-based approach to assist people in their recovery to emotional health and physical wellbeing. In this unit, you will learn about your nursing role in mental health care and recovery. You will develop your skills in establishing a therapeutic relationship in the clinical setting. You will apply the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Registered nurse standards for practice (2016). You will continue to explore the importance of the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards (2017) to all nursing practice in Australia and use the Patient Safety Competency Framework (PSCF) (Levett-Jones et al., 2017) in your practice as a nursing student. You will be expected to identify risk and recognise and respond appropriately in the simulated and clinical environment. You will work within your scope of practice using the decision-making framework (DMF) (NMBA, 2020). You will participate in a compulsory two (2) day residential school prior to attending professional experience placement for this unit. This unit includes a 80 hour block professional experience placement in a mental health care setting. You must meet specific mandatory health, safety and security requirements to be eligible to attend each professional experience placement. Professional experience placements may be limited in your community and you may be placed in other locations. Please be prepared financially and personally to cover the costs to relocate for placements. Due to the limited availability of placements, some block placements have to start and/or end on dates that fall outside standard term dates.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements
All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes - in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).
Recommended Student Time Commitment
Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This was an exceptional unit both in the quality of teaching and the content. By far the most beneficial unit to my learning experience. Every aspect from the weekly content to the res school, assessment and placement was a powerful and needed insight into mental health nursing. It has forever changed my personal and professional mindset in the most positive ways. Thank you for giving me this learning opportunity!!!!
Unit Coordinators will continue to apply diverse teaching, learning and assessment philosophies and methods aligned with pedagogy, andragogy, Bloom's taxonomy framework, Benner's concept relating to stages of clinical competence and principles of equality, diversity and inclusion.
Feedback from 2-Day Residential Schools and SUTE
The learning material and residential school attached to this unit were valuable and well delivered. However, this unit is not enough to adequately prepare nurses to care for those with mental health concerns. I am disappointed that further content and written assessments were not included as part of learning for mental health. I believe this would have best been delivered as another unit. I am aware that post-graduate study is an option, but there are many nurses that will undertake this study and this will result in a lack of understanding and adequate care of patients that are suffering with mental illness. The small amount of time dedicated to mental health demonstrates that the university does not consider mental health to be a serious or worthwhile topic to educate their about. Unfortunately, this is reflected by the attitudes of nurses across the profession. It is unlikely to improve without a solid foundation of learning provided by universities throughout Australia.
Unit Coordinators will continue to develop and ensure the 2-Day Residential School and Moodle learning content, teaching and assessment methods are underpinned by current evidence-informed educationalist and mental health nursing theoretical knowledge and practice skills. The Bachelor of Nursing-Head of Course (BN-HOC)/School of Nursing & Midwifery executive will incorporate this feedback when planning and formulating the revised Bachelor Of Nursing (BN) degree curriculum.

[Unit Coordinator] was a fantastic facilitator and shared so openly his experiences with nursing. He checked in regularly while on placement and I felt very supported. He also contacted me once my placement was done to commend me on my feedback and ask me about my experience. I have never had this from any other university facilitator and it showed such wonderful personalisation and support.

Before attending the Residential School:
- Please test that your CQU Moodle login and password are working.
- Please follow the steps on the NURS12162 Moodle site to access preparatory resources for the quiz.
- The quiz will occur on Day 1 of your Mental Health Nursing with Professional Experience Placement (MH–PEP) Residential School. A reattempt will be accommodated on Day 2 of Residential School (if required).
Please follow the steps below to complete this invigilated online assessment task:
- You are to complete a quiz on the NURS12162 Moodle site, using your laptop computer or internet access device, or on a university computer. The quiz will assess your knowledge and understanding of medication safety in mental health settings.
- Access the quiz via the Assessment 1 portal on the NURS12162 Moodle site.
- The quiz consists of 10 questions. Each question is worth 1 mark.
- You have a maximum of 30 minutes to complete the quiz. You must complete the quiz in one sitting. Once you start the quiz, you must complete it in 30 minutes. A timer will indicate the time remaining to complete the quiz. The quiz will automatically close at the end of 30 minutes and will submit your result even if you have not finished.
- You can have a maximum of 3 attempts for the quiz. The highest result will be recorded as your grade.
- Once you have started the quiz, you cannot log out. Please do not refresh or reload your screen as this may close the quiz and record your result.
- If you have any technical issues let the Teacher or Unit Coordinator/s know immediately. We will assist you with resolving the issue or refer you to TASAC for further assistance (toll-free phone number 1300 666 620).

2 Professional Practice Placement
Instructions
1. Complete the Facilitator/preceptor notification form and submit on SONIA on Day 1 of placement.
2. Maintain an accurate Record of Attendance (Timesheet) with each shift co-signed by an RN, preceptor or clinical facilitator.
3. Complete your formative ANSAT midway through your placement. This requires you to undertake the following steps:
a. Complete the Student formative self-assessment form in SONIA and submit to your assessor when nearing the midway point of placement.
b. Engage in discussion with your assessor after they have completed their feedback in the Formative Assessment in SONIA.
c. The Unit Coordinator will review your ANSAT assessment, add comments and sign it. If you have a score below 3 in any of the ANSAT Formative criteria, a learning support plan may be implemented to provide you with clear performance expectations and goals.
d. Review the Unit Coordinator’s comments and complete the Student Declaration and Signature section at the end of your formative ANSAT. You will receive an email notification when this is available (Completing these steps will trigger the release of the summative ANSAT).
4. Complete your summative ANSAT near the end of your placement:
a. Complete the Student summative self-assessment form in SONIA and submit to your assessor near the completion of your placement.
b. Your assessor will complete your Summative Assessment in SONIA and discuss your assessment and feedback with you.
c. You will be notified by email to complete the Student declaration and signature section on your summative ANSAT.
d. A need to attain a score of 3 or higher for each ANSAT Summative criterion on the summative ANSAT assessment is required to pass the summative assessment. If you do not meet each ANSAT criteria at a 3 or above on your Summative assessment, you may receive a fail grade for the Unit.
e. The Unit Coordinator will review your summative assessment, check the hours recorded on your Record of Attendance, and assign a grade.
5. Your finalised relevant Record of Attendance (Timesheet) must be uploaded into Moodle within 3 days of completing your clinical placement. Your grade cannot be finalised until you have uploaded your relevant Record of Attendance (Timesheet).
1. Facilitator/Preceptor Notification Form: Day one of clinical placement. 2. ANSAT Formative Assessment: By/at the midway during clinical placement. 3. ANSAT Summative Assessment: Last day of clinical placement. 4. Record of Attendance (Timesheet): No later than three days after completing clinical placement.

- You are required to achieve a pass grade for Assessment 2.
- You must complete your clinical placement in its entirety (80 hours) with a satisfactory ANSAT Summative Assessment outcome (a score of 3 or higher for each ANSAT criteria in the ANSAT Summative Assessment) to pass Assessment 2. If you do not meet each ANSAT criteria at a 3 or above on your ANSAT Summative assessment, you may receive a fail grade for Assessment 2.
- Students are assessed against the Australian Nursing Standards Assessment Tool (ANSAT). A copy of this is available to you through SONIA.
- Any unsatisfactory performance that jeopardises people's safety in your care or that does not adhere to the NMBA Registered nurse standards for practice, Code of professional conduct, Code of ethics, A nurse's guide to professional boundaries, and Social media policy criteria, may result in your placement being cancelled.
- All assessments in NURS12162 require a pass grade to pass this unit.
